Wellbeing Wednesday

There is a health issue that has been a recurring theme over the past month in my conversations with clients, colleagues, friends and family. The health issue is denial about that there may be something going wrong with themselves or someone they know.

Naturally we do not want to worry ourselves or others unnecessarily. However when a condition or issue, like a change in behaviour for no apparent reason has persisted for some time, we need stop and ask for help from health professionals.

I hear people say- "Oh I do not want to be a trouble to anyone"(martyr) or "I would rather not know if there is a problem" (ostrich) or "I knew someone who had this condition and it cleared up after a couple of months" (expert)

I am a great believer in that having knowledge about a condition is power and that early intervention in any health condition usually improves health outcomes for the patient. I have witnessed so many people just get ill from worry rather than face a condition that is bothering them.

Please don't let denial get in the way of your wellbeing.

Mindful Monday

Recently I have been making car journeys on roads with heavy traffic and sometimes in dreadful rain conditions. The journey have been stressful and slow moving at times.

I have found that I cope with these journeys much better, for example when I am in a stationery traffic queue, when I use the one minute Breathing Space meditation,STOP. It brings about a sense of calm in difficult circumstances.

So how can you practice STOP

S -Stop and take stock-check in with your head/ heart and body.

Ask yourself-What is my experience right now? become aware of the thoughts that are in your head, what feelings are you experiencing, example: impatience anger. What sensations are in your body-tightness in your shoulders, clenched jaw?

Acknowledge these and register them

T- "Take" a breath-bring awareness to your breath. Simply follow your breath, in and out.No need to change the way you breathe.

O-"Open and observe" Expand your field of awareness to your body, your posture and facial expression, then observe what is around you-sights, sounds and smells.

P- Proceed/ new possibilities with no expectation.

Move your attention wider and sense what is now going on around you in the world.

This one minute breathing space meditation can be used whenever you maybe feeling anxious, stressed or a little overwhelmed.

Wellbeing Wednesday

Take a break.

In the last week I have been out on social occasions with two different friends, both enjoyed the break greatly, they said they so needed to take some time out for themselves. They needed to rest.

We are a rest and sleep deprived society and lack of rest can long term lead to physical, mental and emotional problems. I guess if we thought of ourselves as a car, then we would not drive it for sixteen hours a day at full speed with no maintenance and expect it to continually perform well.

When we are not at rest our body can get in to the "Fight or flight mode", stress hormones pump through our body.Without rest we can stay on high alert and cause our body to suffer. When at rest, we go in to "rest and relaxation mode" and we benefit at all levels.

What are some key benefits of resting ?

We heal better. Our energy is used in the healing process. We are told to rest when we have surgery, a cold/flu.Pain often decreases.

We can feel less agitated, our stress hormones diminish and we can feel less anxious and more relaxed.

We make better decisions and problem solve better-by stepping away from doing to being we can start seeing a situation or event more clearly. We know what next step to take. Our mental fog can start to clear.

Taking even ten minutes here and there in the day as downtime will produce significant health benefits.Give yourself a break.

"Is there a mind/body problem. If so which is it better to have?" Woody Allen

We often think of our mind and body as separate entities, when in fact they are greatly linked. My Grandmother when I was younger was always advising me to listen to my body, she said if I ignored it, then I would suffer in the long term.As a mindfulness teacher I encourage clients to take time out to listen and observe what their body is trying to tell them? Where is there tightness, discomfort, how relaxed are they feeling?.There is no intention to judge or change anything just bring awareness to their bodily sensations.

What have been the benefits of checking in with your on a daily basis;

It helps you get out of my head and feel more calm and grounded

You can become aware of your posture-physical posture and your non verbal behaviour can affect your mood-changing this can greatly improve your mental state.

You can become aware of pain/discomfort/ imbalances, normally blanked out by the distractions in our lives. We can be proactive in dealing with these before bigger problems manifest.

You can become aware of how your thoughts are producing sensations in the body-how does changing your thoughts affect the body? I personally experienced great relief from back pain by understanding how thoughts can increase or decrease pain.

I help people become more aware of their body through mindfulness meditations, breathing exercises and mindful movement.

Water

When the thermometer goes up it always prompts us to drink more water, however we are sometimes unaware that when the temperatures go back more to the normal range, we still need to keep up water intake to remain healthy. One of the most common pieces of advice I offer to my holistic health clients is, "Drink more water"

Signs of dehydration are weakness, fatigue, low blood pressure, dizziness and urine that is dark in colour.

So why is keeping well hydrated so important for our health?

Our digestive and urinary system needs water to efficiently get rid of the waste products out of our body.

Water helps regulate our body temperature. When we sweat it cools our body, if water is lacking our temperature goes up and we can start to feel agitated and unwell.

Water lubricates and cushions joints, spinal chord and tissues. We can engage in physical activity more easily and avoid injury when we are better hydrated.

Water improves the transport of blood and nutrients to our whole body. This keeps us energised and has a positive impact on how we feel and perform daily tasks.

There are other health benefits too such as, better looking skin, improved weight loss if on a diet and fitness regime.

Good ways to increase your water in take is to keep a water bottle with you and drink regularly throughout the day, also increase your uptake of fruit and vegetables that have higher water content.

Mindful Monday

"Every morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most" Buddha

This quote always reminds me of the fundamental teaching of mindfulness which is to live in the present. The present is all we have and it is enough.Being distracted and worried about the past that has gone and a future that has not yet happened robs us of our ability to make the most of the day.

Wishing you a mindful Monday

Wellbeing Wednesdays

So we are all emerging out of COVID lockdown, more people will be returning to workplaces if not for full or part time. I have talked to a few people over the past few weeks who have through working at home realised that previously they had no work/life balance.

Work/life balance is an individual thing but when it is not working we feel like we have no time to do anything, we feel conflicted all the time about where to put our efforts, we can feel strongly dissatisfied with our lives and the stress starts to take it's toll.

When I work with a client on their work/life balance, I review four key areas with them.

Their values and how they show up in their lives

How they spend their time and how well they use time

What is meaningful in their life and how can they increase those meaningful times.

How do they deal with stress and how to practice stress management techniques.

Such a review can throw up lots of issues, some can be solved quickly, some will take time to resolve. In either case a client feels like their awareness of behaviours around work/life balance is heightened and that they have the confidence to change things for the better.

To talk to me about how to improve your work/life balance call -07506 645723. Initial 45 minute consultation is free.

Mindful Monday

It is the 19th July 2021. The much awaited release date from some of the restrictions imposed by the COVID pandemic. The wait has tried the patience of many however it has also taught many of us the value of adopting an attitude of patience. Patience is one of the seven attitudes of mindfulness.

For me this is one of the most powerful of the attitudes to adopt. It puts us in line with nature which is always patient.

Even in our "immediate" world it still takes time to build great things, a business, a family, a nation To become an accomplished athlete, musician, student, a professional in any capacity, takes time- we have to be patient through the challenging and good times. To endure the pressures of illness, pain and loss, takes patience.

To lose our patience can cost us, we lose our sense of judgement and clarity in a situation. We can make more mistakes through rash decisions. Our frustration can result in anger which can burn others and ultimately ourselves.

What rewards have you gained from being patient?
