TRAUMA-SENSITIVE YOGA 11 July

Sadly, trauma is part of the human experience. It has many causes and many ways it shows up in our lives. There is a spectrum of severity, but it touches us all. It alters our nervous systems, our feeling of being ‘safe’ in our minds and bodies, impacting how fully we can live.

Trauma isn’t desirable but it is so common its normal. Trauma can makes us feel ashamed even though it’s not something to feel ashamed of. While trauma is often created by the actions of another, and so it’s not our fault, however we can take full responsibility for our healing and our flourishing. To own our actions and be our best selves.

Nature can be a wonderful way to lift us from difficult feelings into a place of joy. I took this picture on a joyful sunset cruise around the Farne Islands with a group of wonderful women from the Amble Women’s Workshop. We were treated to calm blue waters, the sights and sounds of thousands of seabirds, fluffy chicks, seals, puffins, the golden orb of the sinking sun and the grand finale, a pod of playful dolphins putting on a show for us.

I’m still breathing it in and feeling its nourishment as I continue to heal, grow, learn and share.

Tomorrow I’m offering my monthly drop-in TRAUMA-SENSITIVE YOGA ONLINE on Zoom 11 am - 12.15 pm.
We can draw on experiences of nourishment, even fleeting ones, to support us as we find feelings of inner safety as a foundation for healing. Finding the edges of the jigsaw before filling the inner pieces. Moving with Yoga in service of re-wiring our nervous system and building greater states of resilience.

If you would like to come and join me, ‘pm’ your email or email direct and I'll send you the zoom details. It's £7 or £5 concessions, but no one turned away through lack of funds.

I hope to see some of you soon.

TRAUMA-SENSITIVE YOGA ONLINE I hope you can join me tomorrow, Thursday 11 am - 12.15 on Zoom.

Each session we are building neural pathways of safety in our mind and body. This is the foundation and container for trauma healing. Without this sense of internal safety we can't move forward, build resilience and allow ourselves to flourish. It's not a quick fix, it takes practice to establish these pathways. Just like learning to swim or play an instrument.

Please get in touch for the zoom link and payment details. It's £7 or £5 concessions, but no one turned away through lack of funds.

I really look forward to sharing space with some of you tomorrow.

Sending warm wishes

We're very on trend it seems. We're been planning this before we saw the concept garden at the Chelsea Flower Show linking our gut microbiome and the soil microbiome. So another way that gardening is good for our health.😍

I'll be guiding the morning exploration around the microbiomes. Why a healthy microbiome is sooo good for our mental and physical health and what we can do to improve it.

Do join us for some discussion and movement for a healthy gut...followed by lunch and then getting practical with Anna growing microgreens.

Join us at the Women's Workshop, Amble for the Great Big Green Week.

A recent article on the cross over between Autism and ADHD, known informally as AuDHD, peaked The Minded Teams attention. Libby Walunas, , Minded Yoga Therapist, shared her thoughts on how yoga therapy can support in the rise of this diagnosis.

The Guardian should be commended for their recent article’s respectful, encouraging, and nuanced view of people with a dual diagnosis of autism and ADHD (known informally as AuDHD). The article will feel relatable and validating to many of the high-masking, often high-achieving neurodivergent adults and young people who seek yoga therapy for some of the same reasons that they sought diagnosis: self-understanding that can lead to self-compassion and self-acceptance.

Because concerns about ‘overdiagnosis’ persist, it is important to note that the 2013 DSM change allowing codiagnosis of autism and ADHD was made partly to prevent underdiagnosis of autism. Also, as the article states, AuDHDers (especially non-men) are frequently misdiagnosed with other conditions, such as bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. Mismanaging their symptoms medically or psychiatrically under incorrect diagnoses is likely to be more burdensome than any potential AuDHD misdiagnoses could be. Someone experiencing distress significant enough to qualify for diagnosis is someone in need of support rather than suspicion.

Besides the massive autism and ADHD symptom overlap mentioned in the article, AuDHD co-occurs frequently with trauma and eating disorders as well as other conditions, such as hypermobility, digestive problems, sleep disturbances, immune system issues, and mental health concerns like anxiety and depression. Well-trained yoga therapists and integrative yoga psychotherapists, such as those at The Minded Institute, can help clients create a more easeful life by weaving together professional recommendations and inner wisdom developed through yoga practices.

Whilst medical and psychiatric recognition and management of AuDHD are essential, yoga therapy can assist with underlying mind-body issues, such as the stress caused by the ‘push-pull’ between autistic and ADHD characteristics mentioned in the article. With or without a diagnosis, people with AuDHD traits can find support from yoga therapists trained to meet individuals ‘where they are’ and to address the whole person rather than a diagnosis. We are not ‘treating’ a condition, but rather cooperating with an individual to build awareness and skills toward overall wellbeing and personal empowerment.

TRAUMA-SENSITIVE YOGA ONLINE - is back on this morning after a wee break whilst we've been moving house. 11 am - 12.15 on Zoom.

This pic is me leading some gentle moves for Mondays Beltane celebration at the Women's Workshop in Amble. I'm loving the swallows behind and eagerly awaiting my first swallow siting this year. It's always such a joy.

Today we will be moving with and savouring the joys of this time of year in service of regulating our nervous system. The more we practice the more we re-wire and create greater states of resilience.

If you would like to come and join me to celebrate Beltane with gentle movement, pm your email or email direct and I'll send you the zoom details. It's £7 or £5 concessions, but no one turned away through lack of funds.

I hope to see some of you soon.

Newsletter: I’ve been reflecting on uncertainty. After a lengthy and uncertain house buying process we have finally moved 2 days ago. Simultaneously my partner has discovered new health challenges which are deeply unsettling for us. I notice I want to avoid feeling into the emotions and just keep busy with the unpacking.
I notice that I’m so much better at self-care, yet maybe using it at the expense of feeling ‘because my system is interpreting feeling emotions as ‘too much’....to read more about my journey with uncertainty and a workshop tomorrow called 'Life in the Midst of Uncertainty: Through the lens of the Koshas

New Year Rainbows: Classes, Courses, Yoga Therapy & Psychotherapy -
Whether introvert or extrovert, most of us need support and connection from others and also find meaning in being a rainbow at the end of somebody else’s storm. It’s part of our humanity and part of what is needed to flourish or at least stay afloat in difficult and overwhelming times. https://mailchi.mp/69b649d7c677/new-year-rainbows-classes-courses-yoga-therapy-psychotherapy
