As the summer holidays begin, I just want to take this opportunity to thank every child, young person, family, school and professional who has worked with me over the past academic year, both remotely and in person. You make the work I do an absolute joy, and I am incredibly grateful for that. Wishing you all a very happy, fun and relaxing summer, and hopefully there will be a little bit of sunshine too! ☀️

I am delighted to see a journal article published for a piece of research that I played a small part in! This was such a lovely project to work on.

A really good, easy way to help build up our neurodivergent kids is to validate and encourage their deep interests.

Our deep interests are important. They make up a big part of our personality and our joy.

It annoys me greatly that these interests get called ‘obsessions’, like being super passionate about something is a bad thing. Nope. Do our deep interests need to be contained? Absolutely not. Do they need to be restricted or reduced? Get lost. No. Do we need to ‘branch out’ and explore other things? NO. This IS our thing.

Our brilliance can often be found within those deep interests.
Because they light up our brains with huge passion. We’re intrinsically excited to learn and practice. We create magic. Why would you want to curb that?

Many neurodivergent people go on to become experts in their field, because we are just *that* invested. What a strength. Let us use it.

And when we’re young? Give us opportunities to mix with people who share our interest. Find us extracurriculars that tap into it (if we’re keen for that). Give us opportunities to tell you about it, or to write about it in class. Give us the validation. Make sure we know that our deep interests are valuable and important, no matter what they are. Let us see how far we can go. Ask us how you can help.

And watch us.

Yes?

Between strange outfits, chaotic streets and meeting lots of new people, trick or treating can feel a bit overwhelming for some. Here are some ways that young people can make the most of Halloween if they don’t feel like trick or treating.

This brilliant TV adaptation of A Kind of Spark is available to watch on BBC iPlayer. Written by a neurodivergent author and starring neurodivergent actors - it's wonderful, and definitely worth watching!
