They look like nests but they arn't
Keep an eye out for “witches' brooms” in birch trees, dense bundles of twiggy growth that look like nests built by manic magpies. They are caused by a fungus, Taphrina betulina. It infects buds and young shoots, making the tips produce a proliferation of spindly shoots. (photo taken in Brittany, France, September 22)
