Ian from Music in Mind brought Whittle Hall to life today with a heartwarming music session that had everyone smiling, clapping, and singing along.

Our residents were incredibly engaged — tapping to the beat, sharing memories sparked by familiar tunes, and truly connecting through the power of music. It was a beautiful reminder of how meaningful these moments can be.

Yesterday afternoon we had a sports coaching session with Nic.

Nic creates sessions that are fun, but are carefully designed to deliver real learning outcomes. Whether it’s improving hand-eye coordination, building teamwork, or mastering a passing technique, participants are gaining skills without even realising they’re being coached.

There can be many reasons why people of all ages lose the ability to remain mobile and active – advancing years, illness, or injury to name but a few. Nic transforms people’s confidence, as well as their mental, physical and emotional wellbeing – by adapting games and sports to an individual’s physical ability or cognitive capacity no matter what their environment.

Her programmes are structured around clear learning outcomes, ensuring that every participant—regardless of ability—can experience growth, achievement, and a love of sport.

At the end of the session Trophies are presented to enhance the feeling of acheivement and our residents are always feel very proud of themselves when receiving them.

Today we had Art Therapy led by our Art Therapist Jane from Creative Mojo.

The theme this week was ‘Airshow’. Residents reminisced about air shows that they had been to in the past, and also about RAF planes, (some of the planes painted was inspired by the RAF) one resident mentioned BurtonWood was a famous air field.

Another lovely week ahead here at Whittle Hall.

As well as our weekly Art and Sport Therapy sessions, there’s movie nights, bingo, bowls, board games, a Knit and Natter club, Laundry activity and a session on our Fabulous Tover!

Our Tover, the new name for Tovertafel ( renamed because people couldn’t pronounce it!) is a Dutch designed interactive light projector that enables to you move images around the floor or table top and encourages arm and hand exercise, and improves fine motor skills, cognitive ability and socialising with others. We’re lucky enough to be one of the few care homes in the Northwest to have one of these.

We used our Tover and our Jolly Trolly in our award winning pilot study which looked at whether five minutes activity before a mealtime could impact on the health and well being of people living with dementia. This pilot study is in the process of being further developed by the University of Bradford.

Today’s masterpiece produced during our Art Therapy session led by the very talented Jane Farrely.

Another fabulous piece for our growing gallery was produced, but more importantly it was a lovely session with residents coming together socialising, reminiscing, surprising themselves with their creative abilities, getting those fine motor skills working, building self esteem and cognitive abilities, helping with stress reduction and emotional processing. Art therapy is not just for those who have had a life long passion for art. It’s for anyone, of any ability and of any age. There’s so much more to it that a beautiful piece of art to hang on our walls. But that is ofcourse the end result and such a bonus!

Don’t forget, if you are visiting your loved ones you are more than welcome to take part in any of our activities or events. We actively encourage it.

Today at Whittle Hall, we had Sports Therapy with Rise Sports who brought a fantastic tennis session for our residents to enjoy.

It was wonderful to see everyone getting involved, having fun, and even showing off some impressive hand-eye coordination! Alongside the tennis, we had some lively music playing in the background which added to the uplifting atmosphere, and we finished off the day with a fun and engaging quiz that got everyone thinking and laughing together. It was a truly enjoyable and heartwarming day, full of smiles, energy, and connection. A big thank you to Rise Sports for bringing such joy to our home!
