Animal assisted therapy involves using interactions with animals to help people cope with difficulties and aid recovery. It can help individuals improve their self-esteem, confidence, communication skills, social skills, emotional regulation, levels of empathy, teach appropriate touch and improve mental health. Animal assisted therapy is particularly helpful for children and young people as one to

one therapy sessions can often seem intimidating. Incorporating animals into sessions changes the atmosphere, helping individuals relax, creating a stronger desire to attend and increasing the level of trust with the therapist. Animal assisted therapy sessions are carried out by Jude Leng and her therapy dog Otis. Jude has worked in Primary, Secondary and FE Colleges for 20 years as a Teacher, Mental Health Worker and Counsellor. She has a Degree in Psychology and Criminology, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, is a member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists, has training in Mental Health First Aid, Safeguarding and Special Educational Needs. Jude has particular experience working with young people and adults on the Autistic Spectrum. Otis is a two-and-a-half-year-old Cockapoo (a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle). He has a wonderful temperament; he is playful and energetic when needed but equally happy being calm and relaxed, adapting easily to the needs of each young person. Otis loves being around people and loves his job!
