So .. what is Counselling?
Counselling is a professional, therapeutic process where a qualified Counsellor helps you explore and address personal issues, emotional challenges, mental health concerns, or life transitions. The goal of counselling is to offer a space where you feel heard and understood.
Person Centred Counsellors (also called Humanistic Counsellors) uphold the core conditions within sessions, which include offering unconditional positive regard (acceptance), being empathic and demonstrating a non-judgemental attitude.
Person Centred Counsellors view you as the expert in your experience, and the therapeutic relationship is key to supporting therapeutic change. Counsellors use skills such as paraphrasing, immediacy and the use of therapeutic silence.
The aim of Counselling is to support you to develop insight, new perspectives and coping strategies. This in turn helps to improve your well-being, understand your feelings, develop healthier behaviours, and feel better equipped to navigate difficult life situations.
The therapeutic relationship you have with your Counsellor is central. When choosing a Counsellor, it’s useful to read their directory listing to get a feel for their way of working. If you feel a resonance with them, you can often book a short introductory call, to ask any questions and get a better feel for whether they are the right Counsellor for you.
As we are all unique, you may speak to several Counsellors before you find the right one. As a Counsellor, I’m always happy to offer an introductory call, as I want you to feel comfortable and open to engaging with me.
As an Integrative Counsellor, I offer Person Centred Counselling, with additional tools and techniques from other counselling models. I also offer more traditional Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for clients with specific goals in mind.
