Weight training and bone density.....

Whenever you lift, push or pull, you're not just building muscle.

Weight bearing exercises like squats, deadlifts and chest pressing also strengthen your bones.

This can be hugely beneficial for those people at risk of losing bone density, such as older people or women during the menopause.

Weight lifting isn't just about looking 'buff', it's about building and maintaining strength from the inside out.

How important is weight training as we age?

The World Health Organisation recommends....

# People under 65 should do TWO sessions of resistance training per week.

# People over 65 should to THREE sessions of resistance training per week.

(Obviously, the intensity of the training will vary as we age)

Weightlifting offers significant benefits for older adults, including building muscle strength and mass, improving mobility, and enhancing overall well-being.

It's never too late to start, and even older individuals can see noticeable improvements in strength, muscle mass, improved mobility and better posture.

I currently have 5 clients over the age of 70 and 12 clients over the age of 60....some have been with me for a number of years, some have only recently started.

I'm 62 now.

Gone are the days when I was concerned about looking 'buff', or getting a 'summer body'.

I'm even perfectly fine with my weight fluctuating a bit from month to month.

These days I'm more interested in staying as fit, strong, active and mobile as possible for the remaining third of my life (God willing).
