High blood pressure affects 1 in 4 adults in the UK and is known as the “silent killer” because it often has no symptoms. Left unchecked, it can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, and dementia – but the good news is it’s largely preventable.
The first step? Know your numbers. You can check your blood pressure at your GP, local pharmacy, or at home with a monitor.
Lifestyle changes can make a huge difference:
• Eat healthy – lots of fruits, vegetables, fibre, and water; limit processed and salty foods.
• Reduce alcohol – excess drinking raises blood pressure.
• Stop smoking – one of the most effective ways to protect your health.
• Exercise – any activity helps, and try to reduce long periods of sitting.
Even small changes can have a big impact on your heart, brain, and kidneys. ✅
If your blood pressure is healthy, encourage friends and family to check theirs too.
