✨ Alopecia Areata Success Story ✨

This young patient came to see me earlier this year after experiencing a sudden and severe bout of Alopecia Areata. As you can imagine, the emotional impact on both her and her family was huge, especially when they’d already faced several knock-backs trying to access support.

After assessing her in clinic, I wrote an urgent referral letter to her GP so she could be seen by dermatology much sooner. Her dad recently sent this incredible update from the family:

“Thanks to your letter of recommendation the GP expedited her dermatology referral and she got seen in their clinic early July. She’s been on the prescribed treatment and has seen great regrowth. School have also supported her emotionally, and we’ve already noticed a huge improvement. Thank you for all your help and reassurance during her appointment.”

Early intervention, correct diagnosis, emotional support and the right pathway can make all the difference, especially important for children with AA.

I’m so proud of her bravery, her family’s persistence, and the teamwork between clinic, GP, dermatology and school that helped move things forward. 🌿

⭐️ Recommendation time!!⭐️

hair fibres are the best for camouflaging a widened parting due to hair loss. Perfect for whilst you’re undergoing trichology treatment!

A widened parting can be recognised in cases such as Telogen Effluvium. Where by acute or chronic episodes (short or long term) hair shedding occurs.

Psychologically this can be very distressing. Hair fibres are light on the hair and can be colour matched to your existing colour.

This technique is easy to use, it creates density to the parting and hairline subsequently helping boost confidence!👏

Spot the difference time?!🤔

⭐️ Folliculitis Decalvans.

A condition characterised by pin sized crusts upon the scalp which slowly spread and may result in patches of permanent scarring alopecia.

Scarred patches are smooth, shiny and depressed. Patches may merge separated only by tufts of hair.

The line of treatment is around managing the condition, clearing crusts and sores whilst monitoring the spread of patchy loss. The results of this service speak for themselves.🙌

Progress! 3 months between appointments and we have sufficient regrowth with varying pigmentation termed Vitiligo.

⭐️ Diffuse Alopecia Areata.

Regrowth of this condition can vary from person to person. Regrowth may occur after a few months or years. In more severe cases diffuse areata can lead to extensive hair loss, witnessed in alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis.

The exact cause of diffused alopecia areata is unknown. However causes of such conditions can be related to:

- Genetic Predisposition
- Immune System Dysfunction
- Environmental Factors such as stress
- Hormonal imbalance
- Autoimmune conditions
- Infections and inflammation

⭐Pityriasis Amiantacea - A rare scalp condition characterised by thick, adherent scales which overlap continuing up the hair shafts, similarly to the effect of tiles on a rooftop.

These scales cement the hair together, hair loss may be apparent to the affected area. Patients may have redness around the area of concern and experience itching and discomfort.

💆‍♀️Treatment aims to clear the scalp of scales, release cemented hair whilst reducing inflammation.

This was the result after just one session!!!🤩
