Why did we set up The Listening Tree.
Having always worked with children, I wanted to support them more deeply. After a family bereavement that affected my own child, I realised how vital counselling is in helping young people through grief and mental health challenges. That moment inspired me to change career and begin my counselling training.

Four years later, I stepped into my first role in a primary school, supporting children with a wide range of emotional struggles—and I absolutely love my job. 💬✨

Being able to listen, guide, and help children navigate their challenges is truly amazing. That’s why we set up The Listening Tree: to make sure every child has the support they need to grow stronger, happier, and more resilient.

A question we often get asked is, What Happens in Counselling Sessions?
Counselling isn’t just about talking—it’s about creating a safe, supportive space where children feel comfortable to explore their feelings.

Our counsellors build strong therapeutic relationships by using activities tailored to each child’s age and needs, such as:

🎨 Arts & crafts – expressing emotions creatively

🎲 Games & play – building trust and confidence

💭 Talking therapy – helping children make sense of their thoughts and worries

Every session is designed to help children work through their challenges in a way that feels natural and supportive for them. 🌈

👉 With the right tools and a caring relationship, children can grow stronger, happier, and more resilient.

🌱 Supporting Children’s Mental Health in Schools 🌱
Every child deserves a safe space to talk, be heard, and feel supported. At The Listening Tree, we provide counselling for children who may be struggling with:

💭 Anxiety & worries

🌙 Low mood or sadness

🤝 Friendship difficulties & social skills

🏫 School stress & exam pressure

💔 Family changes (separation, loss, new dynamics)

🌪️ Big emotions & anger management

🌈 Confidence & self‑esteem

Sometimes these challenges don’t need a CAMHS referral—counselling sessions can be enough to help children feel stronger, calmer, and more resilient.

👉 With the right support, children can thrive both emotionally and academically.

🌱 The Vital Role of Counsellors in Schools
Children’s mental health has never been more in the spotlight. With rising levels of anxiety, stress, and emotional difficulties among young people, schools are increasingly finding themselves on the frontline of support. Yet, while services such as CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) are under immense strain—and in many cases not fit for purpose due to long waiting lists and overstretched resources—schools are left searching for solutions.

Why Counsellors Matter in Schools
School counsellors provide a safe, consistent space for children to talk, process emotions, and develop coping strategies. While pastoral support is an important part of school life, children often need the additional expertise of qualified counsellors to fully support their mental health. Pastoral staff juggle many responsibilities, whereas counsellors are specifically trained to focus on emotional wellbeing, providing dedicated space and professional guidance that goes beyond general care.

Their presence in schools means:

🕊️ Early intervention – Issues can be addressed before they escalate into crises.

💬 Accessible support – Children don’t have to wait months for an appointment; help is available where they spend most of their time.

🤝 Continuity – Counsellors can build ongoing relationships with pupils, offering stability and trust.

The Gap Between Pastoral Care and CAMHS
Currently, the government has invested in EMHPs (Education Mental Health Practitioners). While well‑intentioned, these roles often lack the depth of training and experience needed to fully support children with complex emotional needs. What schools truly need is funding for qualified counsellors who can bridge the gap between pastoral support and specialist services.

This is where The Listening Tree comes in. Positioned in that crucial middle ground, The Listening Tree offers counselling that often prevents the need for CAMHS referral altogether. For many children, a series of sessions with a counsellor is enough to help them regain confidence, resilience, and emotional balance.

Why Government Funding Is Essential
Without proper funding, schools are forced to rely on overstretched staff or inconsistent external services. Investing in counsellors is not just about mental health—it’s about safeguarding education, wellbeing, and the future of our children. Every child deserves timely, professional support, and every school deserves the resources to provide it.

As CAMHS continues to struggle under immense demand, the government must recognise the vital role of counsellors in schools. By funding these positions, rather than relying solely on EMHPs, schools can provide the right support at the right time. The Listening Tree demonstrates how effective this model can be—helping children thrive without always needing referral to overstretched services.

It’s time to give schools the tools they need to nurture not just academic success, but emotional wellbeing too. 🌿

🌱 Why Schools Need Counsellors

Children’s mental health is under huge pressure right now. With CAMHS overwhelmed and long waiting lists, many families are left waiting far too long for support.

That’s why counsellors in schools are vital. 💬

They give children a safe space to talk.

They step in early, before problems grow.

They bridge the gap between pastoral care and specialist services.

At The Listening Tree, we fit right into that middle ground. Often, counselling sessions are enough to help children feel stronger and more resilient—without needing a referral to CAMHS.

👉 The government must invest in counsellors for schools. Every child deserves timely, professional support.

Let’s make sure schools have the resources to nurture both learning and wellbeing. 🌈✨

The holidays are over, the decorations are packed away, and it’s time for a fresh start! 🌟

Heading back to school after Christmas can feel exciting and a little daunting for children. New routines, new goals, and lots of catching up with friends.

Here are a few gentle tips to help kids ease back in:

🕒 Routine reset – Re‑establish bedtime and morning routines to make mornings smoother.

📚 Positive focus – Talk about what they’re looking forward to this term (friends, clubs, new topics).

💡 Small steps – Remind them it’s okay to take things one day at a time.

❤️ Reassurance – A little encouragement goes a long way in helping them feel confident

🔥 Meltdowns Happen | Let’s Handle Them With Heart

Whether you're at home or in the classroom, meltdowns can feel overwhelming—for the child and the adult. But behind every outburst is a nervous system in distress, not a child being “naughty.”

Here’s how you can help:

🧘‍♀️ Stay regulated yourself Take a breath. Your calm helps theirs.

👀 Reduce sensory input Lower the lights, soften your voice, offer space.

💬 Validate feelings, not behaviours “It’s okay to feel angry. I’m here to help you feel safe.”

👐 Offer grounding tools Weighted cushions, fidget toys, breathing prompts, or a quiet corner can support regulation.

⏳ Don’t rush the recovery Meltdowns aren’t solved—they’re soothed. Give time, patience, and post-meltdown connection.

💛 Reflect later, not during. Once calm returns, gently explore what triggered the overwhelm and what might help next time.

Every meltdown is a message. Let’s listen with compassion.

💛 Dear Parents: You Can’t Pour From an Empty Cup

We know you’re doing everything you can to support your child’s wellbeing—but don’t forget your own.

Just like on a plane, you need to put on your own oxygen mask first. That’s not selfish—it’s survival. When you’re rested, regulated, and supported, you’re better able to show up for your child with patience and presence.

Here are a few gentle reminders:
☕ Take 10 minutes just for you—no guilt attached
🌿 Breathe before you react
💬 Talk to someone who listens
📚 Use tools that support your emotional literacy too

Your wellbeing matters. You’re not just a caregiver—you’re a whole person. And you deserve care, too.

It’s good to Talk

I am a qualified counsellor. I’ve worked with children for over 20 years as a nursery nurse and I am a mum of 3. I have also been a parent and childminder at St Josephs primary school for 17 years . I recently set up my counselling practice and knew I needed to focus my attention on children and their mental health. I understand how difficult it can be for parents to juggle time off work for appointments, so I have arranged with the Headteacher to visit children during school hours.
