Does the way we talk about Horses change how we treat them?

Sadly is does!

Thankyou Understand Horses for this study .. Horses need this research.

DOES THE WAY WE TALK ABOUT HORSES CHANGE HOW WE TREAT THEM?

A new study has shown that sadly it does. Researchers have taken a hard look at something most of us barely notice โ€“ the words used to describe horses, and whether those words actually influence how we behave towards them and what we do to them.

The findings are uncomfortable reading. Every single participant had heard negative emotive language used about horses, and 97% admitted to using it themselves. Words like โ€˜naughty,โ€™ โ€˜stubborn,โ€™ and โ€˜difficultโ€™ are not just common โ€“ they are effectively embedded in everyday equine culture. But what really matters is the impact those words have on how horses are understood and treated, the consequences of using those terms.

When the researchers presented identical scenarios of horse behaviour, simply changing the wording had a measurable effect on how people said they would respond. Horses described using negative emotive language were significantly more likely to be met with sedation and, in some cases, positive punishment. The same behaviour, described neutrally, led to different decisions.

Even more concerning, people who reported using this kind of language more frequently were less likely to consider pain, emotional state, or give the horse time, and more likely to suggest punitive approaches.

This matters because those words donโ€™t just describe behaviour, they shape how it is interpreted. Terms like โ€˜naughtyโ€™ or โ€˜stubbornโ€™ imply intent โ€“ that the horse is choosing to misbehave โ€“ when in reality behaviour reflects a combination of different factors including genetics, learning history, environment, and current physical and emotional state. Once that assumption is in place, it quietly shifts the focus away from asking why the behaviour is happening at all.

This doesnโ€™t mean that we stop describing behaviour, but it does mean we need to be more precise about how we do it. Focusing on what the horse is actually doing โ€“ for example, 'standing still' or 'not moving forward' when asked to walk on โ€“ keeps the description grounded in observation, whereas describing the same situation as โ€˜lazyโ€™ adds an interpretation about intent. That shift might seem small, but it changes how the situation is understood and whether it leads to further questioning or a fixed assumption.

The study also highlights that most people say they use these words out of frustration, habit, or even jokingly. But intention doesnโ€™t seem to protect against impact. Even subtle changes in wording influenced decisions, despite people watching the exact same behaviour.

If the words we use make us more likely to punish, less likely to investigate, and less likely to consider pain or fear, then they are shaping outcomes in ways that matter. So this isnโ€™t just semantics. The language we use can clearly become a welfare concern.

As you have probably noticed, we have come into the time of year the Cow Parsley is growing for fun and it has many health benefits for your Horse ๐ŸŒฑ

BUT! A question I am asked regularly ~ is it? โคต๏ธ

๐‡๐„๐Œ๐‹๐Ž๐‚๐Š ๐Ž๐‘ ๐‚๐Ž๐– ๐๐€๐‘๐’๐‹๐„๐˜?

Hemlock and Cow Parsley look similar. Although cow parsley is safe and tasty for our horses, hemlock is very poisonous and can be fatal even in small quantities.

There are some differences between the two plants, and hemlock can be identified as follows:

โ–  Hemlock has smooth stems (whilst cow parsley has ridged stems like celery)
โ–  Hemlock has distinctive purple splashes on the stems
โ–  Hemlock has more luxuriant foliage
โ–  Hemlock flowers a month later than cow parsley (whilst cow parsley is in flower now, hemlock tends to flower in June and July)
โ–  Hemlock prefers damp places but can grow just about anywhere
โ–  Hemlock has an unpleasant musty smell, resembling mouse urine (whilst cow parsley smells fresh and herby)

You can pick nutritious Cow Parsley for your horse without worrying if it's hemlock.

How aware are you when you touch your horse?

You don't just touch with your hands (physically). Most often, the intention/energy behind your touch is more important.

Have you noticed that your horse will often respond to your presence, your energy, your movement? Maybe they change their posture, their facial expression, or even move their body/feet. In this way, we "touch" our horse with our energy and intention... whether we like it (or mean it) or not, before we are even close enough to physically touch them.

When you physically touch your horse... are you aware of that energetic/intentional presence in your touch? Or are you just "blindly" touching your horse.

When you are at a distance that is too far for physical touch, are you aware of your energy and intention in that interaction?

One thing we can be certain of: there is no such thing as "no energy" when we touch or interact with our horse (or anything else, for that matter). But there is often "unintentional energy" in our interactions if we aren't aware of our intention or energy.

(Sometimes, some horses learn to completely ignore this if they spend enough time around humans that are unaware or rude with their energy, while some others may even get offended/defensive... and these learned compensations bring on entirely new challenges).

Much like a meditation, each time we are around our horses, we should start every interaction with setting our energetic intention. Even if that intention is just "to be" with our horse. Be intentional with everything we do. Because it will always affect our horses... whether we are aware or not.
