Our bodies age, as life reveals,
Our minds can keep an even keel,
Our hearts are as young, as we feel,
Our souls are timeless, ageless, still.
Here I am in Pathos, Cyprus, from last week, flexing my back Cat Pose style in Wide-Legged forward bend, flowing into headstand with some creative words about ageing. Whenever I practise a yoga sequence, I feel decades younger. It’s amazing how what we do with our body affects how we feel, and even how old we feel. I’m not a big fan of marking particular ages with big celebrations, because I honestly never feel the age that our natural cycles say my body is. Time, as Einstein said, is relative, and not even an objective reality. The cycles of our solar system are outwardly very real of course, and these are the basis for our ‘age’, which we record, discuss, and celebrate or regret! Our chronological age is different to our biological age. The current view is we can shave up to 20 years off our biological age by changes in behaviour. So, if we celebrate our 60th birthday, we might be impressing on our consciousness an age that is 20 years older than our biological age. My age of course is not limited to my body. I do not identify my sense of self just with my body. More powerful than our body is our mind. Our minds, experts now think, can actually improve for most of our life. More powerful than our mind is our heart - a more reliable indicator of what we actually do in life. From our heart identity we get the phrase; ‘we’re as old as we feel’. And beyond all these are our soul and spirit, who source and presence are timeless. So how old am I? As old, young, or ageless, as my last breath, and the Self I identified with at that moment. 🙏🔥🧡🔥🙏
