A great post from Awesome Supplements about sprinting......are you sprinting for HIIT or for performance?
Sprinting for HIIT vs sprinting for performance – know the difference
To perform a HIIT workout, typically an athlete will sprint as fast as they can for a certain time or distance, then rest for a certain period of time, before going again.
Usually it’s the case that the subsequent sprints will be done while the heart rate is still elevated
The idea here is to get a lot of work done in a short space of time, to burn a few kcals, and to improve anaerobic fitness
Sprint training in order to get faster, though? That’s a bit different
Sprint training done in order to improve peak speed and acceleration involves sprinting varying distances at varying speeds (do you think Olympic sprinters just rock up and do 100m as fast as possible?) and resting
Lots, and lots, and lots of resting
A good HIIT workout may involve 5 rounds of 30 second sprint, 30 second rest
A good sprint workout may involve a 50metre sprint, 4 minutes rest, then another, repeated for a given number of sets
Both approaches are valid, but they have different purposes, so whatever your approach,
Be sure you know why you’re doing what you’re doing!
