How lucky are our girls to grow up seeing birth as something natural, powerful, and safe? 🌸

Ask them where you can have a baby, and at just 5 years old they’ll tell you all the options — they know their own birth stories: the hospital for them, and our home for their sisters.

Our generation grew up with a very different picture. We saw birth on soaps, dramas, films — always scary, loud, dangerous. That narrative shaped our fears before we even became parents.

But that’s not the whole truth. Birth can be calm, supported, and on your own terms. It’s time we rewrite the story so the next generation can grow up knowing they have choices. ✨

✨The First Thing I Did After Birth Was…

…Smell My Baby 👶

In that first sacred moment, before anything else, I pulled my baby close and breathed her in. It was instinct.

If I’d put a hat on my baby straight away, I wouldn’t have had that moment.

🧢 Why hats aren’t necessary right after birth

For years, hospitals routinely popped hats on newborns to help keep them warm. But research shows skin-to-skin contact with the birthing parent regulates a baby’s temperature better than a hat ever could. The warmth of your chest, your heartbeat, and your breath help your baby adjust to life outside the womb far more effectively.

👃 Why smelling your baby matters

Bonding boost: A newborn’s scent triggers oxytocin release in the parent — the “love hormone” that deepens connection.

Breastfeeding benefits: That scent can stimulate milk let-down and help with early feeding cues.

Emotional grounding: It’s a primal signal that your baby is here, safe, and yours.

So if you can, keep your baby close, hat-free, and skin-to-skin in those first golden hours. Your body and theirs were made for this. 💛

We'd like to introduce the newest member of the Beyond the Bump team:

Bryony Harper
Born at 11:59 on 6th of August, weighing 9lbs 14oz.

After quite a few wobbles and doubts over the last couple of weeks, she was born at home at 42+4 weeks. It was an incredible experience and amazing birth, and she's absolutely perfect. The midwives even commented on how perfect her placenta was, despite being so 'overdue'.

I couldn't have done it without my incredible birth team surrounding me:
My hubby: Rich, my sister: Meg, and my partner in crime: Vicky ❤️
With hours to spare before leaving on holiday, was able to join us and take some absolutely stunning photos. We'll be sharing more of these soon because they are amazing!

I never thought I'd be the one to experience such a long pregnancy, and man - it was tough. I am so glad I had the support I did and held my ground because I could not imagine a more perfect birth 🥰
