A mental disorder is not definable in the same way as a physical illness. People living with a long-term condition are two to three times more likely to experience mental health conditions than the general population.

We have limited understanding of what is happening in the bodies and brains of those who have a mental disorder. Yet we label them and talk about mental disorders as if they are a thing that can be defined. However, the society we live in and socioeconomic factors can also impact the development of mental illness and physical long-term conditions.

Julie Lennon, Senior Clinical Lead at Education for Health, discusses mental health and long-term conditions, and why we have developed two courses for healthcare professionals.

An abnormal heart rhythm is classified as an arrhythmia—a disruption in the normal electrical conduction of the heart. Among arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common, and it arises from chaotic and uncoordinated electrical signals within the atria.

9 out of 10 strokes are preventable; the burden of strokes on health resources is considerable and can be mitigated by prevention aligning with the Government Fit for the Future 10 Year Health Plan.

Julie Lennon, Senior Clinical Lead at Education for Health, discusses AF in our latest blog and delves further into why we need to learn about it: https://ow.ly/wvxe50XbEeJ

This World Mental Health Day 2025, we wanted to recognise a critical connection that affects millions: the impact of mental health on those living with long-term conditions.

Through our work at Education for Health, we recognise the significant impact that mental health has on patients living with these conditions and the vital importance of addressing both together for effective, person-centred care.

We offer specialist training that enables healthcare professionals to support both the physical and mental wellbeing of their patients:

· Impact of Mental Health on Long Term Conditions (Level 7): A 3-month postgraduate module exploring evidence-based approaches to assessment, management, and person-centred care strategies.

· Supporting Mental Health in Adults with Long Term Conditions (Level 6): A 6-month interactive course building confidence in delivering holistic care as part of multidisciplinary teams.

Both courses emphasise practical skills, effective communication, and partnership working because when we support mental health alongside physical health, we transform outcomes for the people in our care.

On the 19th & 20th September we attended the PCRS Conference 2025. We had a brilliant day meeting so many attendees, engaging in some fantastic conversations about our course portfolio. The programme was brimming with the latest topics in respiratory delivered by leading experts in the field.

Whilst at the conference we ran a competition to gift one lucky winner a Level 5 or Level 6 course of their choice. We are delighted to announce that our winner was Darshan Negandhi! Darshan said, 'I’m thrilled to have won a place—continuous professional development is central to my work, and I’m excited to put this learning straight into practice to improve patient outcomes.”

We wish Darshan all the best with his studies on his chosen course!
