Did you know we can assess your frailty risk just by measuring your grip strength?
It sounds simple! but the science behind it is remarkable.
Grip strength acts as a proxy for overall upper body strength and muscle mass, both of which play a crucial role in metabolic health, function, and long-term independence. In physiotherapy, it's one of our most valuable clinical tools.
Frailty is a common concern among older adults, characterised by weakness, increased vulnerability, decreased physical function, and susceptibility to injury and grip strength is one of the earliest indicators we look for.
When muscle strength diminishes, physical activity tends to decline too. leading to reduced cardiovascular health, insulin resistance, and an increased risk of falls and injury.
The reassuring part? Frailty isn't inevitable. With the right support, exercise programme, and early intervention, grip strength can be improved at almost any age.
If you or a loved one has noticed difficulty with everyday tasks, opening jars, carrying bags, getting up from a chair, it may be worth getting assessed. That's exactly what we're here for.
