It was a happy ‘accident’ that resulted in Chris Levine’s meditative portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. He had set out on a commission to commemorate the Isle of Jersey’s 800th year of allegiance to the crown in a holographic portrait, a process that involved an extraordinary technological array: a high-resolution digital camera which moved along a rail taking 200 images over eight seconds, a 3-D data scanner and a medium format camera which he could use, if necessary, to capture information he could texture-map onto the 3-D data sets. The queen was required to sit still for 8 seconds at a time, and between the passes she closed her eyes to rest. Levine was struck by the beauty of her meditative state and snapped the shutter.
A picture like this would have been inconceivable even 20 years ago. The formal portrait has for some time been fraying around the edges, but now in our paparazzi culture it reads as entirely bogus. Closed eyes were reserved for great singers and musicians, who were in tune with another world; Kings, Queens and statesmen had to have their eyes open and fixed firmly on the here-and-now. In recent years, the Queen has been fair game for subversive image-makers. Tibor Kalman imagined her as a black woman in his series What if?, while Alison Jackson made her out to be, well, just like the rest of us. Yousuf Karsh would role over in his grave.

The beautiful Rose valley, Bulgaria has been a producer of rose oil from Rosa damascena Mill for more than 400 years. Also farmed here are Rosa alba and Rosa centifolia. The rose plants are cultivated in Central Bulgaria in the “Valley of the Roses” which is between the towns Karlovo and Kazanlak. A simple distillation process takes place using local spring water, each unit is loaded with 500 kg of petals and four times the amount of water! The blooms are picked by hand each day with the earliest pickings being of higher oil content and worth more per kilo to the locals who bring there huge bags of petals throughout the day. All roses are processed within 24 hours to ensure the best quality and yield. So sad we don’t have smellovision on this trip 💕.

It’s with a very heavy heart that I must tell you ‘Spa Social’ our little nurturing treatment space in Kineton is to close. Our lease is not being renewed and so I will be winding down in the next couple of weeks. It is very sad as has been so kind and welcoming. I have so enjoyed building relationships in this lovely community. It really is a very special place. I will be in contact with all those who have appointment bookings or outstanding vouchers. If you would like to keep in touch please comment or DM me so I can be sure to add you to my contact list. Right now I have no idea what happens next, I’ll just hold on and see what life has in store!
