Young people at Washington Mind

Young people at Washington Mind Washington Mind is a local independent charity offering a range of mental health and wellbeing services and training to respond to the needs of local people.

We are Washington Mind's Young People's Project, a free counselling service providing youth-led projects and support for 11-25 year olds and in Washington, Sunderland, Hetton and Houghton. We do our best to ensure that the services are provided in a way that makes people feel comfortable and accepted in a non-judgemental and supportive environment. The young people’s project is a service aimed at young people aged 16 – 25, living in Sunderland, Washington and the Coalfields. Our aim is to provide a range of services to promote the mental health and wellbeing of the young people in our communities. Some of the services we provide for young people include counselling, group support, training, workshops and work within the community. At Washington Mind, we believe that every young person has the ability to make the right choices and live a meaningful and fulfilling life.

“Tough times are sent to try us”, “life is a rollercoaster” and “you have to take the rough with the smooth” are all things you may have heard people say from time to time. Life definitely does have its challenges and some people are more able to cope with them than others. Your teenage years may be particularly challenging as you are growing and changing rapidly and may have to cope with new and unfamiliar situations. You may find yourself under the stress of exams, leaving school, starting college, university or work, relationship problems or changes within in the family, for example. Common problems can include anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, anger and stress. Sometimes it can be difficult to talk to your parents or friends, but keeping your problems bottled up can make them more difficult to cope with. Talking definitely does help so if you feel you would like some support with any of the problems mentioned or you have any other concerns for your emotional wellbeing, please do not hesitate to contact Washington Mind on 0191 417 80 43

If your child has received their GCSE results today, here is some useful advice on managing a disappointing outcome from YoungMinds:
1 If they are happy to show you their results statement, you might find it helpful to have a look, just in case they have misread or misunderstood, or overlooked something.
2 Accept their feelings, whatever they are – disappointment, anger, embarrassment, bravado. Their feelings are neither right nor wrong, they just are. Don’t offer immediate judgement, or solutions, or even reassurance – there will be plenty of time for conversations later.
3 Reflect back how they are feeling to show you have understood, for example, “I can see you’re disappointed with the Maths result.”
4 Let them know you love them through highs and lows. Big hugs are good (although may be embarrassing in public).
5 Show you’re on their side - it could be something small like getting their favourite snack.
6 Give yourself some breathing space and time to reflect.
7 Ask the school to help your child explore any possible next steps, such as re-takes, re-marking or alternative courses.
8 If your child is disappointed with their results, they might also be embarrassed. Agree with them how they want their results discussed with family and friends, if at all.

Best of luck to everyone receiving their exam results today, it is important that you look after yourself today and here are some useful tips from YoungMinds:
1 Stick to your routine
Sticking to your everyday routine will help you feel more settled and balanced.
2 Let yourself feel
You don't have to be modest or put on a brave face. However you're feeling is valid. If you're disappointed with your results, give yourself time to process and talk to someone you trust.
3 Don't panic
You don't have to make a decision about your next steps straight away. Give yourself time.
4 Don't compare
Someone eles's success is not your failure. No matter what results you received, be proud of who you are and the effort you put it.
5 Celebrate
You've been through so much. Take the time to celebrate. You've got through a huge chapter of your life. And that chapter has shaped who you are today. That's worth celebrating.
