☺️ major smug face dietitian mum, but also probably quite annoying!!!! I asked my 7 and 8 year old what snack they would like post football. I suggested cereal or something on toast, they requested houmous and kimchi on rice cakes!!! 😆 I admit, 1 will eat anything, the other likes to ‘negotiate’. I know it’s not always this easy but a few points to help:
- at a neutral time, talk to your children about the nutrients food can provide E.g. calcium for bone strength, protein for muscle strength and recovery
- relate these facts to their goals, E.g. kick the ball in football or concentration for exams
- ask them how they feel when you offer a new food? Some can say they feel ‘pain’!
- discuss the process of trying new foods and what they can expect
- use the phrase: different is different, not bad, when trying new options
- let them lead on what they can manage, seeing the food for the first time, maybe tricky for some
- will they feel safe to add the new food to a comforting food? But never hide the food.
- help them to feel safe in the process, understand their fear, and then reassure them, but guide them that you are starting this process because you love them and want to support them in their goals and the future
You’ll be surprised at how early in childhood, and how late, you can apply this information
