Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by infected ticks. It's usually easier to treat if it's diagnosed early.

A circular or oval shape rash around a tick bite can be an early symptom of Lyme disease in some people. The rash can appear up to 3 months after being bitten by an infected tick, but usually appears within 1 to 4 weeks. It can last for several weeks.

Some people also get flu-like symptoms a few days or weeks after they were bitten by an infected tick, such as:

- a high temperature, or feeling hot and shivery
- headache
- muscle and joint pain
- tiredness and loss of energy

See a GP if you've been bitten by a tick or visited an area in the past 3 months where infected ticks could be
and you have:
- flu-like symptoms – such as feeling hot and shivery, headaches, aching muscles or feeling sick, or
- a round or oval shape rash

Tell them if you have recently been in forests or grassy areas.

Join the Live Longer Better revolution today!
Hampshire County Council are excited to launch a brand new Live Longer Better Hampshire website www.hants.gov.uk/livelongerbetter

It has been developed for adults aged 65+, following conversations with Hampshire residents, and highlights key preventable conditions that many people receiving social care experience. The aim is to support you to make positive changes that will give you the best opportunity of living life to the full. Live Longer Better (LLB) is a national revolution to help older people stay independent, live life to the full and keep doing what they love. In Hampshire, we live a long time, however, our life expectancy does not correlate with healthy life expectancy - that’s the number of years individuals perceive they live in good health.
The website harnesses the best possible intervention: movement. Through being more active, there is strong evidence to suggest many major causes of disability and dependency can be prevented or delayed. Live Longer Better Hampshire helps us shift the way we think about getting older. We want to live in a world where getting older is something to be celebrated.

This website will help you find ways to stay independent, live life to the full and keep doing what you love. If you’re in your 60s, 70s or beyond, you can take positive steps now to improve your health and live longer, better.

12/06/2023

Insect bites and stings will usually cause a red, swollen lump to develop on the skin. This may be painful and, in some cases, can be very itchy. The symptoms will generally improve within a few hours or days, although sometimes, they can last a little longer. An allergic reaction can occur, causing symptoms such as breathing difficulties, dizziness and a swollen face or mouth. This requires immediate medical treatment.
What to do if you've been bitten or stung?
To treat an insect bite or sting:
- remove the sting or tick if it's still in the skin
- wash the affected area with soap and water
- apply a cold compress (such as a flannel or cloth cooled with cold water) or an ice pack to any swelling for at least 10 minutes
- raise or elevate the affected area if possible, as this can help reduce swelling
- avoid scratching the area, to reduce the risk of infection
- avoid traditional home remedies, such as vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, as they're unlikely to help
The pain, swelling and itchiness can sometimes last a few days. Ask your pharmacist about medicines that can help, such as painkillers, creams for itching and antihistamines.

New telephone system

Blossom Health will be implementing a new telephone system from 8/9 June.
Due to changes in the new GP contract advising Practices that digital telephony is required in 2023. It has been decided to implement a new telephone system including messaging, call recording and a queuing system with a call back function. This decision was made with the new contract in mind and in response to patient feedback expressing concerns over the current telephone system. We are confident it should provide greater functionality for practices and patients.
As a patient you will still be able to call the same number for your registered site (02392 474 777 for Bedhampton, 02392 474 351 for Havant)
New function for Bedhampton patients; instead of having to redial the number until you are able to get through you will be placed in a queue and the call will be answered once a member of staff becomes available.
New function for both sites; if you are unable to remain in the queue you also have the option of requesting a call back, this means your place in the queue will remain virtually without you having to stay on the line, when it’s your turn and you will receive a call back.
The new system will allow us to provide a better patient experience when the lines are busy as well as give us access to call demand and data to support the practice and ensure staffing levels are accurate and providing insight in order to improve responsiveness further down the line.
We believe that this new system will be beneficial to both you as patients and to the practice as a whole. We are grateful for any feedback you might have especially any comments once the new system goes live. Please use the contact us form on the website https://blossom-health.co.uk/contact-us/ if you would like to get in touch.
