HERB PROFILE

For the next few weeks I will be going through different herbs used in Ayurveda.

GUDUCHI is translated as "that which protects the body". It is starting to be recognised in Western Medicine for its cancer treating and protecting properties.

It is known as a Rasayanic herb, one that "destroys ageing and disease".

It is a tropical creeper that has heart shaped leaves.

It can:
-SUPPORT THE IMMUNE SYSTEM especially supporting post-viral fatigue, ME and after cancer treatments by speeding up the repair of the immune system.

-NORMALISE GUT FLORA aiding digestion, helping with constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, acid reflux, candida overgrowth and other related issues.

-HEAL THE LIVER by regenerating liver tissues
-calming to help with stress and burnout but also increasing physical and emotional energy.

-HELP INFLAMMATORY SKIN CONDITIONS such as acne, eczema and psoriasis.

-ANTI-INFLAMMATORY so helps with arthritis.

Not suitable for Pregnancy and Breast Feeding.

Mother in law brought across a little food bundle today as me and hubby are down with covid.

I know I have been full on with my Ayurvedic eating. I lost 6.7lbs last week. But today I went off piste. Usually I would berate myself for that. However, I know that if I stick to eating only 3 times a day and at the key times, giving my digestive system time to rest rather than on the go all the time I should be fine.

Sam has been teaching us about 70%, 30%. If I am sticking with it 70% of the time, I am fine to pull my foot off the accelerator and go off piste 30% of the time and it’s ok!

So I ate it and I savoured it. And I didn’t get angry with myself. I am learning and developing every day x

COVID TIPS:

I am learning so much from my ayurvedic training and here are a few tips just in case you yourself or someone you know are struggling with covid. Remember this is for over 18's and not for those who are pregnant or breatfeeding and please do read the advice on the labels:

1: REST!!! I struggle with this being very Vata. I treated myself to a yin yoga session last night and a bath. (Note to self, steep the herbs before pouring the liquid into the bath as I started to feel like a Sunday roast with a Thyme, Rosemary and Peppermint dressing!)

2: Vitamin C, D and Zinc. I am getting vitamin C and Zinc into my children through Sambucol Elderberry Liquid, they love it and ask for it every morning now! I have been taking Vitamin C and Zinc effervescent tablets. Kids also love their Approved Vitamins A-Z pro which they also beg for daily!

3: Andrographis, also known as Indian Echinacea. I am taking this as I currently have covid. Pukka sell this. It is excellent for colds and flu as it is an infection fighting herb.

4: Eat nutrient dense foods. So fresh fruits and vegetables. One of my favourites is a soup I regularly make is a Japanese inspired soup. Fry a couple of onions and some garlic cloves along with some freshly grated ginger. Add chopped Sh*take mushrooms, Pak Choi and a jug of stock. Bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes. You may wish to add soy sauce, miso paste or fish sauce if you wish for extra flavour. Sometimes we add precooked noodles and a tuna steak cooked in ginger and garlic on top too!

5: Keep Hydrated!!!

6: Inhale Bay Laurel essential oil. I know that I sell it through Neals Yard but you can get it from many other places. Place it in a bowl of warm water and inhale it, taking a few deep breaths..

AYURVEDA’S ORIGINS

Ayurveda is the oldest medical system in the world. It was first documented 5000 years ago in the Indus Valley, same as yoga. However, it is probably more like 6000-7000 years old as it would have been practiced and spread through word of mouth prior to being documented in the ancient Vedic texts.
