Recognizing the symptoms of a mental health crisis is essential for early intervention, prevention of harm, and access to appropriate support.
Mental health crises often involve profound emotional and cognitive symptoms. Individuals may experience extreme mood shifts, ranging from intense euphoria to deep depression, as well as irritability, anger, or panic. Confusion and difficulty concentrating are common, making it hard to complete even familiar tasks. In more severe cases, a person may experience distorted perceptions of reality, such as hallucinations or delusions, or develop intense paranoia and excessive fear. Feelings of detachment—such as feeling unreal or disconnected from one’s surroundings—can further deepen distress and isolation.
