Young at Heart Physiotherapy

Young at Heart Physiotherapy Home based Physiotherapy for older adults in West Hertfordshire. Hello, I’m Magali, a Chartered Physiotherapist and Founder of Young at Heart Physiotherapy.

I hold a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy from King’s College London and full accreditation with the Charted Society of Physiotherapy and the Health & Care Professions Council. I have over 12 years experience working across a number of NHS trusts, including Guy’s and St Thomas’ and West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals. During this time I have worked in a number of areas, including: Care of the Elderly, Stroke Rehabilitation, Orthopedics, Respiratory, Surgical and A&E. I specialise in techniques designed specifically for older adults (65+). I focus on improving strength, balance and overall mobility in order to reduce the risk of falls and support independent living. I know first-hand the life changing impact early Physiotherapy intervention can have on older adults. Sadly, this isn’t always available or comes with long waiting lists. Young at Heart was founded to address this problem, ensuring that tailored, high quality treatment can be accessed quickly and conveniently. If you or a family member are in need of support, please feel free to contact me so we can discuss potential treatment options.

🏋🏽THE IMPORTANCE OF STRENGTH TRAINING

Did you know that by the age of 80 you could lose up to 40% of your muscle mass? This can significantly increase the risks of falls.

The good news is that this is preventable and reversible! Strength training has been shown to be the most effective method for preserving and increasing muscle mass and function.

Whilst you might associate strength training with bodybuilders in a gym, the reality is that anyone of any age can benefit from strength training. This should be progressive and tailored to an individual’s ability.

Please get in touch if you would like to discuss what a personalised strength training programme could look like for you!

🏥 5 TIPS FOR RECOVERING FROM HIP SURGERY

Following your post-operative plan is really important for recovery. Please get in touch if you or a loved one need support following hip surgery.

1)🩺 Follow your Doctor’s direction: Adhere to any post-operative instructions, medications, wound care and follow-up appointments advised by your Doctor.

2)👟 Perform your exercises: Exercise is key in your recovery to rebuild strength, joint range of motion, balance and function. This should be tailored to an individual's needs and goals by a Physiotherapist.

3)🩼 Use the right walking aid: Walking aids can provide support and stability when mobility is limited by pain. It can play an important role in the facilitation of your gait re-education by promoting a more natural walking pattern.

4) ↗️ Pace yourself: Start with light activities then gradually increase your level of activity. As you regain strength and mobility a gradual approach will help minimise pain, swelling and fatigue.

5) 🍎Maintain a healthy lifestyle and diet: A balanced diet will help support healing and boost your immune system. Drinking plenty of water will help to keep you hydrated. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided as this can impair healing and increase complications risks.

This general advice does not replace that provided by your own Doctor. Continue to follow their instructions and contact them
if in doubt.

💪🏽Use it or lose it! The benefits of weight training for older adults.

A recent study published in the British Medical Journal discovered that older adults who performed weight training over a 1 year period successfully maintained their muscle strength and lean body mass, whilst those who did not experienced a noticeable decline.

No matter your ability, progressive weight training can significantly improve your health and quality of life. If you’re feeling apprehensive about this kind of exercise, please get in touch and we can work on a tailored approach together.

🌷 It’s finally starting to look like Spring!

As the weather improves and the sun starts to shine, you may be thinking about your next outdoor adventure. No matter your age, walking is a fantastic way to improve muscle strength, joint mobility, bone density and cardio fitness.

Unfortunately, the fear of falling can deter many older adults from walking regularly, which in turn can negatively impact their overall health. I have worked with many patients in this situation, to help identify their risk factors and develop a tailored treatment program.

Please get in touch today if I could be of support to you or a loved one (07405134103 / Magali@YoungAtHeartPhysio.co.uk)

❗️Around 1 in 3 adults over 65 and half of people over 80 will have at least one fall a year (NHS, 2021).

Sadly, falls which result in injury are the leading cause of mortality in older adults (CSP, 2019). Physiotherapy can help identify a patient’s risk factors and develop a suitable treatment plan that mitigates the risk of falls. Young at Heart Physiotherapy specialises in developing tailored treatment plans for older adults (65+) who have had, or are at risk of, falls.
