We were delighted to welcome Watford FC’s Under 21 players to Watford General Hospital this week ⚽💛

The players spent time bringing smiles to children on Starfish and Safari wards, as well as visiting Children’s Outpatients. They chatted with patients and families, met our colleagues and even donated toys for children to enjoy on our children’s wards.

The team also learned more about the vital work of West Herts Hospitals Charity and the difference it makes for patients across our hospitals.

A huge thank you to the Watford FC players for helping to brighten the day of our youngest patients.

Healthcare in West Hertfordshire is being redesigned to create a more modern, coordinated system. With rising demand, ageing buildings and fragmented services, patients often reach a crisis point before receiving the right help.

This approach is especially important in south and west Hertfordshire, where more than 100,000 people live with frailty. As people age, they often need support from multiple services at once. Neighbourhood Health brings these services together, helping prevent sudden deterioration of health and avoid unnecessary hospital visits. This group represents around 10% of the population but accounts for up to 80% of hospital visits.

In the following article, Dr Tolu Adesina and clinicians explain these changes, the challenges and opportunities in West Hertfordshire, and what this means for patients: https://www.westhertshospitals.nhs.uk/about-us/news/neighbourhood-health

Huge congratulations to our nurses Stephanie De Pinto and Jane Walker who were awarded a Purple Super Star Award for helping a patient with a learning disability overcome his fear of having a PICC line inserted 💜

Stephanie and Jane were nominated by patient Gavin Howcroft, who praised their patience, communication and reassurance during his stay in hospital.

Together, the pair helped Gavin overcome his fear of a PICC line being inserted by clearly explaining what the procedure was while reassuring him. A PICC line is a long, thin and flexible tube inserted into the veins in an arm.

Gavin thanked Stephanie and Jane during the award presentation, saying: “Stephanie and Jane took their time with me and helped me feel calm and confident. You both helped me through my nerves and make sure that I got the best treatment possible.”

The Purple Super Star Award is a part of the Purple Star Strategy Project which aims is to make healthcare services better for people with learning disabilities.

A Game-Changer for Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Care 🏥

We are delighted to share that a new high-tech KTP laser is now operational at St Albans City Hospital.

Precision is everything in delicate ear surgery. This new equipment reduces surgical risks and is expected to lower revision rates for mastoid surgeries from 25% to less than 10%. For patients with conditions such as otosclerosis, this surgery can be truly life-changing, with over 95% of patients seeing an immediate restoration of their hearing.

Rohit Pratap, Consultant and Head of Department of ENT, said: "The arrival of the KTP laser is a game-changer for our department and our patients. Not only does it improve outcomes, but it also provides a fantastic training opportunity for our junior staff."

A huge thank you to West Herts Hospitals Charity and The Grace Trust for their vital support in securing this equipment for the 600,000 residents we serve.

We said thank you and farewell to Cheryl Atkins who retires after an incredible five decades at West Herts Hospitals 💙

From joining as a student nurse in the 1970s to becoming a much‑loved Senior Staff Nurse, Healthcare Assistant and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) champion, Cheryl has shaped the culture and compassion of our hospitals.

Her creative IPC campaigns (from ‘Glove Island’ to ‘Grime Watch’) inspired so many staff at West Herts and beyond.

Cheryl’s leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humour and unforgettable moments, and with a reminder that kindness should always be at the centre of healthcare:

“Treat every patient the way you’d want someone to treat your mum.”, she said. “Kindness must never become optional.”

Thank you Cheryl for 50 years of dedication, light and laughter. You will be truly missed 💐
