As Spring comes, the warmer weather naturally means more external construction work and more MEWP use on sites. With recent trends around height related incidents worryingly on the rise in recent years, it's essential that all personnel involved in working at height are fully safety trained.

Falls remain the leading cause of construction deaths and training is a legal requirement under the Work at Height Regulations 2005. People do often underestimate the risk of working at height which can lead to incorrect use of equipment, PPE and machinery.

HSE have a wide range of safety information online, including https://www.hse.gov.uk/construction/safetytopics/mewp.htm which focuses on MEWP hazards, risks, training and ongoing inspection/maintenance.

The most significant MEWP dangers arise from their operation and use rather than from their movement as a site vehicle. The law says that these hazards must be properly controlled.

We know the future of UK construction safety depends on inclusion, especially as the sector faces a number of challenges.

Whilst women currently make up a small percentage of site-based roles in UK construction, many are leading in health & safety, compliance and site management.

With future workplace safety and cultural change reliant on diverse leadership, communication, inclusive environments and broader talent pipelines, this Women's History Month we all need to focus on the opportunity to encourage more women into construction and H&S roles.

Our range of Environmental Management courses include key elements related to recycling and waste on construction sites. These include:

Feeling tired at work isn’t just about needing an extra ☕

Fatigue can seriously impact safety, focus and decision-making - increasing the risk of mistakes, accidents and long-term health issues. In safety-critical industries especially, a lack of quality sleep can have real consequences for both individuals and teams.

This , we’re supporting employees and employers to better understand the link between good sleep and safer working. When we prioritise rest, we protect productivity, wellbeing and workplace safety.

Better sleep = clearer thinking
Better sleep = fewer errors
Better sleep = safer workplaces

The IOSH Sleep Well to Work Safely course is a professional fatigue awareness training programme designed to help organisations reduce fatigue-related risks and improve workplace safety. It is aimed at businesses in a wide range of industries to support safety culture, improve employee wellbeing, alertness and productivity.

This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the women improving safety on our construction sites.

This week, we're looking at PPE - how safe is it if it doesn't fit properly?

Ill-fitting PPE has been identified as a barrier for women on site, with industry bodies are pushing for inclusive PPE procurement. Fit testing and ergonomic design are gaining greater attention with female-specific PPE ranges becoming readilty available to ensure fit and prevent injuries.

Dame Judith Hackitt has been an influential figure in UK safety regulation as former Chair of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Whilst at the helm, her leadership reinforced:

Employer accountability
Competency requirements
Risk-based safety management
Clear duty-holder responsibilities

PPE is directly related to all of these, as it must be suitable, appropriate and compliant under the regulatory oversight she helped to shape.

This Women in Construction Week tag a woman who makes your site safer 👇

Or share how your organisation is improving:
✔ PPE provision
✔ Site culture

Claiming CITB Grants Before April

If you haven’t yet maximised your available support, acting in March can help you save on training costs and ensure your workplace remains safety trained and compliant.

With the end of the current tax year on 5 April, make sure you check as to whether you have unused CITB grant entitlements. Funding may reset in the new tax year so delaying evidence and claims now can mean lost support down the line.

All information is available on the .uk website: https://www.citb.co.uk/levy-grants-and-funding/citb-levy/

March marks both Women in Construction (WIC) Week and Women's History Month.

is a long-standing initiative founded by the National Association of Women in Construction () to recognise and amplify the vital contributions of women across the construction industry.

WIC Week has grown into a national platform that brings together professionals through webinars, events, mentoring and community outreach - pushing for diversity, equity and inclusion in a sector that historically hasn’t reflected the full talent pool.

NAWIC have lined up a series of Webinars over this week covering industry trends, career advancement and workplace practices. See more here: https://nawic.org/wic-week/

Work Safely Month is ending - here’s what we learned.

👉 Mental health problems and stress can lead to accidents - make sure you know how to spot signs of both
👉 Training is key for being aware and proactive with safety in the workplace

Let’s keep the momentum going - how are you going to prioritise working safely moving forward?
