Water safety awareness event, The Embankment, Wellingborough - Friday 25 July 12pm โ€“ 3pm

We are holding a Water Safety Awareness Event on Friday 25 July to mark World Drowning Prevention Day 2025, following the tragic loss of 3 lives in the water of the Embankment in Wellingborough.

NNC Stronger and Safer Communities Team with Ronaldโ€™s family, who tragically died after getting into difficulty in open water, are supporting the organisation of this event, in the hopes to raising community awareness to prevent future tragedies.

The event is being held with different partners coming together to provide advice, information, and practical learning and life-saving skills to help members of the public to remain safe when in aquatic environments.

The focus of the event will be to promote the prevention of drowning and how to help a casualty from the land if people come across an incident in progress. There will be live demonstrations of first aid and CPR techniques to educate the community on how to safely support someone who has got into trouble in water.

The World Drowning Prevention Day event scheduled for July 25th is undergoing a change in organization. NNC will now host the event, necessitating the removal of the current poster. A revised poster will be shared upon receipt. Thank you for your understanding. Remember safe in open waters ๐Ÿ’ง ๐Ÿ™

The National Water Safety Forum recently announced that a high percentage of accidental water deaths in the UK last year took place around inland waters such as rivers, canals, lakes, reservoirs and quarries.

North Northamptonshire has many beautiful waterways to enjoy a walk or run by, and with inland waterways dangerously cold - below 16C (60F) - all year round, we're sharing advice to residents and visitors to the region to be extra careful around our rivers, lakes and other inland water sites.

If you get into trouble in the water, Float to Live. Lean back and use your arms and legs to help you float, then get control of your breathing before calling for help or swimming to safety.

If you see someone else in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the fire service.

๐ŸŒŠ Drowning Prevention Week โ€“ 14โ€“21 June ๐Ÿšจ
Every year, lives are lost to accidental drowningโ€”many in places you wouldnโ€™t expect: rivers, lakes, canals, even flooded quarries.

This week, weโ€™re joining Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK to raise awareness and help you stay safe around water:

โœ… Stop and think โ€“ Spot the dangers
โœ… Stay together โ€“ Never swim alone
โœ… Float to Live โ€“ If you fall in, fight the urge to swimโ€”float on your back
โœ… Call 999 โ€“ In an emergency, donโ€™t enter the waterโ€”get help fast

Letโ€™s enjoy the water safely this summer.
