The lovely Karen Kimmins from Wellington is requesting breastfeeding mothers to help her with her photography project. Karen aims to promote and normalise breastfeeding and capture those special moments with beautiful photos. Check out her page for more details.

** I now have enough volunteers, thank you :)
My Breastfeeding Project -
The idea behind this project was to try and help further remove the stigma around extended breastfeeding and to also encourage mums to get in photographs of this big achievement in their lives.
I realised pretty quickly the project is much bigger than what I imagined it would be and so I’d like to extend taking part in the project to any of my previous clients that have had a newborn session with me or any future clients booking in for a newborn session. So past clients, please do get in touch if you’re still breastfeeding and would like to join the group, and if you have an upcoming session with me, please let me know if you’d like to join the project.
As I’ve decided to add the mums breastfeeding stories to accompany the photographs, it may be an idea to add some mums who for whatever reason couldn’t breastfeed and are expressing/pumping milk and feeding through a bottle. I may possibly take this further again once I’ve got through the chunk of the volunteers in my group. You can see the project as it develops over on my website. I’ll pop the link to the project so far in the comments below :) x

I hope everyone is keeping well. Below is a maternity update regarding face mask. X

From Monday, 15 June 2020, you will need to wear a face covering when you attend our hospitals as a visitor or outpatient.

In line with the new government guidelines we ask that you wear a face covering for all of your maternity appointments, scans and walking around the hospital.

A face covering should be worn when you arrive at the hospital, whilst walking in corridors, during appointments and while you are in the
antenatal ward (for induction/assessment) but you may remove it when alone in your private bay.

You will not be asked to wear a face covering during labour but you can if you choose to.
Birth partners will be offered the choice to wear a mask whilst in the birth room but must put one on before leaving to walk through corridors.

A face mask will be provided if you are unable to provide your own.

INTERESTING! FROM My Expert Midwife Did you know, since the Covid-19 lockdown began in the UK, mums and midwives across the country have seen an increase in the number of babies coming back up to their birth weight by day 5! - Something that has not been seen in decades!
It is totally normal for your baby's weight to decrease post birth, however in recent years, it's been known to take up to day 10, or longer, for babies to get back up to their birth weight. This meant, extra measures were advised if your baby's day 5 weigh-in didn’t reach the expected amount.

Interestingly, what the lockdown and self-isolation has shown us is that without a constant stream of visitors, mum and baby have had a better opportunity for uninterrupted bonding which seems to have hugely helped mums and babies to establish breastfeeding and feed for longer, helping them regain their weight far quicker!

Whilst this evidence from midwives and other professionals is only anecdotal, at this stage, we hope that, once the NHS workload has returned to normal, formal research can look into this data in greater detail as this could have a huge impact on how women and their partners prepare for postpartum and breastfeeding.

****Question and Answer Time****

You can now access messaging and telephone support with an infant feeding team via this FB page. Please read post fully before making contact.

It is more important than ever, we all support each other to continue to provide babies with readily available, anti viral protective breastmilk during this Covid-19 pandemic.

Our infant feeding team are keen to support you at home with establishing and continuing to breastfeed. Close contact and early exclusive breastfeeding helps a baby to thrive

Breast milk is perfectly designed for your baby, constantly adapting to meet your baby's changing needs. If you or a member of your house hold become symptomatic it is important you continue to breastfeed so you transfer your antibodies to your baby. Breast milk reduces your baby's risk of infection and disease. The longer you breastfeed, the longer the protection lasts and the greater the benefits.

At present we have capacity to open the messaging facility on this page so if you have a baby under 6 weeks old and you would like to speak to us about feeding your baby you can private message us with your name, baby’s name and date of birth and a telephone number. We might be able to answer the question via messenger or give you a call.

This is not a 24 hour service and due to workload we will only be able to speak directly to those mums who have had a baby in our catchment area and under 6 weeks. However, our usual referral pathway remains in place.

This page also includes lots of information and signposting to support you at home.

With from immediate effect, Musgroves Breastfeeding Workshops have been stopped, for the foreseeable future. With this is mind, alongside the social distancing which is being highly encouraged- the infant feeding team have created a Fb resource page providing information of the topics that would have been discussed at the workshops. This resource is designed to support families in preparation and initiation of breastfeeding but also skin to skin, recognising milk transfer and when baby is getting enough milk and ways to build close and loving relationships promoting optimal brain development in your baby. It is as important as ever to breastfeed your baby.
Please note, this page is a resource and the normal referral system should be followed if you require complex or urgent support.

This breastfeeding resource page has been created by the Infant Feeding Team at Musgrove Park Hospital. It is important as ever to continue to promote, protect and support breastfeeding during the challenging current climate.
