We love South Devon! Took the coastal path from Hope Cove to Bantham today! Walked back through the stunning village of West Buckland. Steep but very pretty šŸ˜

If you think taking weightloss injections is ā€˜cheating’ I hope my article widens your perspective.

ā€˜You just need to eat less and exercise more.’ I can’t tell you how many times I heard this very flippant, insensitive and even damaging comment.

A few years ago as I was going through the menopause transition and noticed a change in my body. The weight was piling on rapidly and my legs became heavy. I cried on my doctor who was very empathetic. She suggested I upped my HRT and offered some support through a dietician.

The thing was I didn’t need educating on diet. I consider myself an expert on dieting. I’ve been doing it since I was 16 (before I even had a weight problem).

About 6 months later I started training to become a menopause practitioner. The training was very comprehensive and taught me all about turning inflammation around. Over the year I’d overcome insomnia, changed my diet to the Mediterranean style of eating, changed up the kind of exercise I was doing to improve cardio vascular health and lymphatics. I then worked on liver health and healing my gut. I studied every single night and incorporated lifestyle changes.

The weight gain stopped.

I then started to lose a pound here and there. Eventually I lost just over a stone. It was very slow and I was losing motivation. I went back to my GP as I wanted to discuss the weightloss injections. She weighed me and congratulated me for losing weight. Despite my BMI being in the obese category, the weightloss injection wasn’t an option as I didn’t have a comorbidity.

I ate less, introduced intermittent fasting and walked around 10k most days including steep hills. I swam a few times a week.

I couldn’t lose any more weight. And my legs became painful.

It’s only recently that I’ve been diagnosed with lipedema. Lipedema is a painful fat storage and connective tissue disease under the skin. Fat deposition is particularly pronounced in the legs and arms. It’s a progressive disease where exercise and diet has little or no effect.

Learning that it’s progressive scares the hell out of me but finally I can make sense out of why I’ve struggled so much to lose weight.

Having joined some support groups I’ve learnt that these weightloss injections help. I’m on my fourth injection and have lost another 20lbs.

I’ve learnt that walking, self lymphatic massage, vibration plate, anti inflammatory diet, swimming all helps.

Now does all of that sound like ā€˜cheating’?

Lipedema is probably genetic and is affected by hormonal changes. Whilst there’s no cure progression can be slowed down with compression and lifestyle tweaks. Therefore early diagnosis is important.

Well meaning comments from friends, family, colleagues and even personal trainers ā€˜just eat less, exercise more, go keto’ Have just added to the feelings of failure, shame and being misunderstood and unheard.

Lipedema is just one example of why someone may struggle to lose weight. There are many other medical conditions as well as psychological problems. Please let’s not judge… especially when we don’t know the facts. Thanks for reading šŸ’•

After 5 years of no cycling… I finally got my bike serviced and went out on a ride down cheddar gorge and it felt amazing!

Well the climb up Old Bristol Road didn’t feel amazing, I was slow and panting! But who cares, I did it!

Did you know that mid aged women are the highest group that drop out of exercise?? Hardly surprising is it? If it’s not the fact that most of us feel absolutely exhausted, many women struggle with sore and aching joints. This was me too.

There were so many light bulb moments during my studying in the science of lifestyle solutions through menopause. And I couldn’t have come across this course at a better time. Because I didn’t know that my heavy weight training was contributing to the inflammation that was occurring because I wasn’t sleeping back then. I didn’t know how vulnerable us women are during this time, even though menopause is a very natural transition.
Nature isn’t always kind!

I started getting my fitness back through brisk walking I’m lucky that where I live there’s plenty of hills to improve cardio fitness! I still walk 7-10k a day. It helps regulate my nervous system too and this time of year get my vitamin D quota. An early morning walk is one of the most powerful things you can do to turn insomnia around.

But I’d forgotten that amazing buzz cycling down cheddar gorge!!

If you’re feeling stuck and disempowered get in touch and we can set up a call and discuss how mindset work and coaching can get you unstuck and back doing the activities you love!

I used to think that you could get vitamin D from the sun all year round. You can’t! It’s only around about now that the sun is strong enough to get our vitamin D (in the UK!).

Vitamin D is so important that it’s now known as a hormone. Especially for women in menopause and post menopause. Because the benefits go far beyond helping the absorption of calcium for our bones and muscles!

Vitamin D also supports our heart health (which is our biggest killer in post menopause) and helps with immune function!

So a great excuse to make sure you get your walk out in the sunshine ladies!

And if you’re not sleeping well, morning exposure to the natural daylight is one of the most powerful things you can do to help reset your internal body clock!

Today I’m 53! Spending a few days away doing what I love… walking hilly coastal paths šŸ˜„ followed by a couple of drinks in a beautiful quaint Cornish pub and the catch of the day!

So i wanted to share this story… my husbands new boss is a lovely guy from China, he’s only in his late twenties… set up a business a few years ago in the UK. A couple of weeks ago it was his birthday, over here with no family the husband arranged a little celebration for his birthday and I spoke to him the following day. He was so touched that his employees had made so much effort for him for his birthday. He said that in China they don’t really celebrate their birthdays… instead they celebrate by taking their mum out for dinner as a thank you for giving birth… they celebrate their mum…
I love that….
So today I celebrate my mum… I can’t take you for dinner but… I can raise a glass to you… cheers to you mum… thank you for giving birth to me 53 years ago šŸ’•šŸ’•

Self-Talk... From Pressure to Possibility! Just ONE word can make all the difference...

The language we use internally can really influence our mindset and emotional state.

For example there's a compelling distinction between "should" and "could" in our self-talk:

"Should" often carries a weight of obligation and guilt, suggesting a duty rather than a choice.
"Could," on the other hand, opens the door to possibility and personal agency, encouraging a more empowering approach.

Here's how minor tweaks in our language can shift our perspective:

From: "I should be further along in my career."
To: "I could explore new ways to advance my career."

From: "I should always have the answers."
To: "I could seek more knowledge and ask for insights when needed."

From: "My boss should appreciate me more if I work extra hours." To: "I could find ways to improve my work-life balance while maintaining high performance."

You see... changing just one word can transform a statement from a source of stress to a statement of opportunity :)

What words are you choosing in your self-talk?
