Following the release of 'Adolescence' on Netflix, many of us have been reflecting on how digital culture shapes—and often conceals—the inner worlds of the young people we work with.

The image below outlines how emojis are being used as coded language for drug use, s*x, violence, and emotional distress. As therapists, we know symbols often speak louder than words—especially when words feel inaccessible, risky, or shameful.

Emojis can serve as symbolic expressions of unmet needs or unspoken trauma. Ask yourself, is this a metaphor, a performance, or a signal? It’s rarely surface-level.

These digital glyphs are part of the evolving adolescent narrative—both protective and revealing.

How might these codes offer insight into attachment, identity, or risk-taking behaviours?
Crucially, how can we equip parents and carers to interpret these signs with empathy, not alarm?
