Friday Fact - Getting older is not a cause of lower back pain!

Although it is a widespread belief and concern that getting older causes or worsens lower back pain, research does not support this, and evidence-based treatments can help at any age.

This week is so we thought it would be a good idea to share information with you, that could help improve your pain and physical activity levels!

Did you know that daily exercise can help relieve back pain? While a typical response to back pain is to take it easy, either staying in bed or at least stopping any strenuous activity, resting for more than a day or two can actually undermine healing and worsen pain!

If you're suffering from some back pain then try these back stretches from the NHS: https://youtu.be/VDf43fOTH1E

Did you know that October is ?

High Cholesterol is when you have too much of a fatty substance called cholesterol in your blood.

One of the main causes of high cholersterol is due to not exercising enough. Getting your blood pumping by doing exercise will help reduce your cholesterol and can help prevent falls!

You don’t have to join a gym or go on long runs if you don’t enjoy it, just look for chances to move more every day such as taking the stairs instead of the lift or going for a walk on your lunch break.

Our last stretch for is the chest stretch.

This stretch is great for opening your chest, helping with better posture and also breathing.

If you are unable to place your hands onto your lower back, try bringing your hands towards your hips. Make sure you concentrate in drawing the shoulder blades together.

It is Falls awareness week this week, so when was the last time you, or the person you care for, visited an optician?👓

A lack of visual awareness and contrast sensitivity is a potential falls risk as it makes seeing the edge of steps and curbs harder, alters depth perception, and causes visual disturbances. Therefore, it is important to encourage people to wear the correct lenses and glasses, which are also clean and not damaged in any way.

If it has been more than a year since your last eye check-up then it's time to schedule your next eye examination with an optician!

Its Falls Awareness Week !

Did you know that the evidence towards Falls Prevention is to focus on balance and coordination 2 days per week?

Give these heel raises a go to strengthen the ankle and the back of the lower leg.

How to perform the heel raise:
- Holding onto a stable chair, push up onto your tip toes.
- See if you can start to perform 8 repetitions, reduce the number of repetitions down if you would like to take it a bit easier.
- To progress the exercise slowly lower your heels to the ground, with control.

And Stretch! It's which means it's time to stretch.

Today's exercise is the calf stretch. To do it, sit upright on the edge of your chair with both feet flat on the floor. Straighten out one leg, keeping a soft bend of the knee. Keep the heel of one foot flat on the floor, lift the toes of that foot and point them toward the ceiling. You should feel a stretch in the muscles of the back of your lower leg. Hold for 10 -15 seconds. Then repeat on the other leg. Do this at least three times with each leg.

Remember, if it is too painful reduce the time you hold the stretch for.

Whether it's steps, distance or active minutes, setting a daily target and hitting it will feel great!

Tracking apps – like Active 10: https://www.nhs.uk/better-health/get-active/ or a health app on your phone – can help, but even just a checklist on a piece of paper will do.
