Where did Chiropractors come from??
In 1895, a man named Daniel David (D.D.) Palmer performed what is considered the first chiropractic adjustment. Palmer believed that many illnesses were caused by misalignments of the spine—later called subluxations—that interfered with the nervous system’s ability to function properly. After adjusting the spine of a janitor named Harvey Lillard, who had been partially deaf, Palmer claimed Lillard’s hearing improved. This event sparked the foundation of chiropractic as a distinct healthcare profession.
Palmer’s ideas were influenced by anatomy, neurology, and a growing interest in natural healing methods. He proposed that the spine plays a critical role in overall health because it protects the spinal cord, which connects the brain to the rest of the body. Early chiropractors focused on restoring spinal alignment to allow the body to heal itself without drugs or surgery—a philosophy that continues to shape the profession today.
In 1897, Palmer founded the Palmer School of Chiropractic, the first chiropractic college, which helped formalize education and training. Despite early resistance and legal challenges from the medical establishment, chiropractic gained popularity because patients experienced relief from pain and improved function. Over time, the profession became licensed, regulated, and integrated into modern healthcare systems.
Today, chiropractors are recognized as healthcare professionals who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders, particularly those involving the spine. Chiropractors exists because of the enduring idea that structure affects function, and that supporting the body’s natural ability to heal can lead to better health and quality of life.
