Check on your neighbours!

A friendly visit or a quick phone call can make a big difference, especially for those who may feel isolated during the winter months.

Let us look out for each other and ensure everyone stays safe and healthy.

FOLLOW is an acronym for six key evidence based strategies that parents, carers and early years professionals can use with children to help support and develop their language skills. It stands for:

🧒Face to face - Get down to your child's level
👁️Observe - Observe what your child is playing with and following their lead
🗣️Label — Label what your child is playing with using single words and phrase
❓Limit questions - Limit the number of questions you ask your child — use comments instead
🤝Opportunities - Create natural communication opportunities with everyday activities
✋Wait — Wait and pause to give your child the time and chance to communicate

This simple but effective initiative is making a huge difference to the development and outcomes of babies and children in Hertfordshire.

Last week, it was named winner of the HSJ Early Intervention and Prevention for Children, Young People and Families Award. 🏆

We talked to the team about what it means and how they came to develop it.

Need to pop into town? Make sure you stock up your medicine cupboard!

Ensure you have all the essentials to handle minor ailments like colds, coughs, and headaches.

Having a well-stocked medicine cupboard means you can treat symptoms early and avoid unnecessary trips out in severe weather.

We’re incredibly proud to share that our FOLLOW initiative has WON the Early Intervention and Prevention for Children, Young People and Families category at last night’s HSJ Awards! 💙✨

FOLLOW is our simple, evidence-based framework that helps parents and carers support their child’s communication skills from birth. It’s already making a real difference to children and families across Hertfordshire and West Essex — and this award is fantastic recognition of everyone involved.

Our Chief Executive, Elliot Howard-Jones, said:
“We couldn’t be prouder of the Speech and Language Therapy team for their outstanding achievement. The FOLLOW initiative shows what’s possible when a great idea is developed through partnership working and evidence-based research and embedded into routine practice.”

👏 A huge shout-out as well to our Chief Medical Officer, Dr Elizabeth Kendrick, who was named a finalist for Clinical Leader of the Year!

It's important to protect yourself and your family this winter.

All school-aged children, children aged 2 to 3 and children with certain long-term conditions are eligible for the flu vaccine.

Flu can be very unpleasant for children and can lead to serious complications, such as pnuemonia.

Vaccinating children also helps protect others who are at higher risk of getting seriously ill from flu, such as babies, anyone who's pregnant and older people.

Our team will be at Peace Children's Centre in Watford on Sunday from 9.30am to offer vaccines for children and anyone else who is eligible.
