Having worked in the Insurance Industry for over 25 years, I decided it was time for a complete change of career. After volunteering for some Care Work, I knew straight away I had found my calling.
I joined a local Care Company and underwent all my basic training and thoroughly enjoyed my new role, despite the long hours and the disappointment of not seeing the same client very often so not having the chance to really get to know them. For this reason, I moved to another Company where I was placed with 3 lovely ladies, 2 of whom had dementia (this being very close to my heart having lost my father to this terrible illness at a fairly young age).
Whilst working for this Company I was nominated for an award and won West Midlands Carer of the year 2013 – 2014, which I am very proud of.
In March 2015 I decided to set up my own business, providing domestic help in the home and companionship care to clients with dementia. I have slowly developed the business up and I’m proud to employ a loving team of staff. I am extremely pleased with the reputation we are building for a caring service in the town, employing local staff to look after local people.
An important aspect for me moving forward, is to encourage social interaction within the community, we will be organising outings and events such as coffee mornings, and trips out, we have already enjoyed a sing along with Elvis at the Hill Valley Hotel in Whitchurch and a trip to the Pantomime in Shrewsbury, we also attend the events organised at the Town Hall in Wem which are dementia friendly.
We will continue to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society, we made a donation of £530 which was raised at our Christmas party.
When we consider new staff to work for us we consider whether they are good enough to look after our own family meaning we have only the best staff.
