This whakatauki talks about sharing knowledge and working in collaboration with one another. It acknowledges that everybody has something to offer, a piece of the puzzle, and by working together we can all flourish.

In this instance, Im extremely blessed to say that I have such a strong support system behind me, helping me navigate my way through this little journey of mine 🥰. As many of you are aware, I am very strong in my beliefs when it comes to implementing Tikanga Māori especially when it involves being hāpu. So im truely greatful to those who have taken their time out of there day to help me harvest the kawakawa leaves. It's very humbling to know that your mana, aroha and mauri is also being implemented into each batch that I make, making it even more special and benefitting to those who are using it.

What is Kawakawa?
•Kawakawa, also known as "Macropiper exceisum" or "NZ Pepper tree" is a herbaceous shrub that can grow from three to six metres in height and about 5-10cm long by 6-12cm in width.
•It's broad, heart-shaped leaves have a smooth surface and are arranged in an alternating pattern.
•When growing in the shade or in forests, these leaves usually display a deep green colour. However, when growing in more open areas, these often display a yellowish green colour.
•Kawakawa produces fruit in the summer and both the fruit and seeds are edible

Why is it called Kawakawa?
•The name "Kawakawa" in Māori refers to the bitter taste and smell of the leaves. Kawa = Bitter

What were Kawakawa leaves traditionally used for?
•To brew herbal remedies or concoctions. A dissolution of leaves in hot water would bring out the flavours, aromas and essential natural minerals.
•The leaves could also be turned in a poultice and applied topically to treat skin abrasions and ailments.
•These leaves contain myristicin, which is mildly antiseptic and has pain numbing properties which can be used to allay toothaches.
•Overall it's a safe and a natural way to look after your tinana internally and externally.

What is Kawakawa most commonly used for?
•To soothe the digestive system and rejuvonate energy
•To heal our tinana (Internally and externally)
•To strengthen our hauora

As many of you are aware, I have been making Kawakawa Pani for quite sometime now as its been a strong passion of mine since wayyyy back 🥰

After much thought and ALOT of procrastinating 🤣🤦🏽‍♀️, I figured why not continue on with this passion of mine by helping others heal, nurture and strengthen their hauora 😊💪🏽

My why's..

-Because I have worked alongside tamariki of all ages and have in the past witnessed the extent of how painful and uncomfortable it is for them to have sensitive skin, particularly when they have nappy rashes, Eczema, bumps, burns, cuts etc..
I couldn't help but feel sooo sorry for them. This then empowered me to do something about these reoccurring issues, so I decided to make Kawakawa Pani for them in hopes of healing their tinana. Since then I've been strengthening my knowledge and confidence in making this.

-Being Hāpu has definitely motivated me into starting this new journey of mine as it makes me feel even more connected to my tinana, my hauora and my Pēpi. So by starting this little journey (with ofcoarse the consideration of the tikanga involved when I'm harvesting and/or preparing). I'm hoping to help other hāpu women and many other people feel even more connected to their tinana, hauora and pēpi aswell.

Overall I'm extremely excited to start this and pass my knowledge down to you all 😊🙌🏾
