I have to say something about this book!
My sister leant this to me for our summer trip with the warning that it would not be easy holiday reading and she was right!
But it was so powerful that as soon as I finished I immediately ordered myself a copy!
talks about classical music and how important it was/is for managing his significant trauma and resulting mental illness and it is unbelievably moving. ❤️🩹
The descriptions of the music itself, what it means to him, as well as fascinating insight into the composers we tend to know by name but little else, really encourages you to go and listen for yourself, which I absolutely loved doing! There is a piece for every chapter 🎶
This book reminded me of the unbelievable ability we have as humans to survive unimaginable harm and just how important music can be as a source of comfort. I’ve definitely been playing the piano a lot more since reading it 🎹
Be warned, the descriptions of childhood sexual abuse, self-harm, suicidal ideation, psychiatric institutions and mental illness are confronting and brutal but that’s what makes it so powerful - it is the real experience of so many people. A better understanding of these topics is important and necessary and survivors deserve to tell their story. But seriously consider whether you’re in the right head space to read it, particularly if you’ve been personally affected.
Having said that, he brings humour (believe it or not), his story is inspiring, gives hope to survivors and promotes classical music in a relatable way that leaves you wanting to explore more.
