MAJOR INCIDENT DECLARED FOLLOWING FIRE AT UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL SOUTHAMPTON

A major incident has been declared at University Hospital Southampton this morning following a fire.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to Southampton General Hospital at 5.30am and the fire has now been contained.

Nobody has been injured as a result of the fire and patients in all affected areas have been evacuated to safe areas of the hospital.

Roads surrounding the hospital have been closed by emergency services.

Visitors are asked to stay away and all planned outpatient appointments are cancelled today.

Parking is being made available on site for staff who are coming into work.

Our Emergency Department is currently diverting patients away unless your condition is deemed life or limb threatening.

We are asking anyone requiring medical attention to use other services in the community including the Urgent Treatment Centre at RSH or Lymington.

We will be keeping our website and our social media channels updated.

⚠️ Product recall: SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula

Nestlé is recalling several SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula products as a precaution due to the possible presence of cereulide toxin.

Cereulide can cause rapid onset of nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps. It’s unlikely to be destroyed by boiling water or cooking.

Even if your baby seems well, it is essential to stop using affected products. If the formula was prescribed by a health professional, consult a pharmacist or other medical professional before changing formula.

A big thank you from Jo and the welfare team for all your kindness and generosity with supporting this years Christmas Toy Appeal, you certainly kept us busy collecting these and delivering them to our wonderful Partner and collector for the area (Shelia Elsey)

Your kindness will have had such a positive impact on children in Southampton who might have woken up to nothing on Christmas Day.

Short of Breath, Think COPD! 🫁

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name for a group of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties.

COPD is a common condition that mainly affects middle-aged or older adults who smoke. Many people do not realise they have it.

The breathing problems tend to get gradually worse over time and can limit your normal activities, although treatment can help keep the condition under control.

The main symptoms of COPD are:
- shortness of breath, particularly when you're active
- a persistent chesty cough with phlegm – some people may dismiss this as just a "smoker's cough"
- frequent chest infections
- persistent wheezing

Without treatment, the symptoms usually get progressively worse.

See a GP if you have persistent symptoms of COPD, particularly if you're over 35 and smoke or used to smoke.

Do not ignore the symptoms. If they're caused by COPD, it's best to start treatment as soon as possible, before your lungs become significantly damaged.
