From around 6 weeks’ gestation, small amounts of fetal DNA pass into the mother’s bloodstream via the placenta. The FGIH Gender Blood Test analyses a maternal blood sample to check for the presence of the Y chromosome. If detected, this indicates a male fetus; if not, female.
This is a laboratory-based DNA test, not an ultrasound scan and not a home testing kit. The sample is taken by trained staff using a standard blood draw and processed by a specialist laboratory.
Results are typically sent by email within 2–3 working days of the appointment.
Key points:
✔️ Suitable from 6 weeks
✔️ No scan required*
✔️ Non-invasive and safe

*whilst an ultrasound scan is not required for this test, we do recommend that you have had a scan at some point prior to the blood draw to date the pregnancy.
