🔸Myofascial Release for the Treatment of Chronic Pain🔸
🔹Whilst treating clients with chronic pain complaints, it's important to work with the body in order to ease tension and reduce pain. What this means is to work with what the body allows you to work with; working too deeply or attempting to force the injured tissues to release will usually only result in increased tension and more pain! 🔹Working gently does not mean treatment is any less effective and, in fact, will usually result in longer term pain relief due to the fact the body is not bracing, or guarding, against the therapists pressure. As a therapist, it's important to know when further pressure is required and when to give the body the space and time it needs to allow changes to take place. The old saying of 'no pain, no gain' does not always ring true - particularly with long term pain conditions. Working too hard can excite the bodies nervous system, creating more muscle guarding, tension and potentially increase pain.
🔹Myofascial Release is a gentle hands on soft tissue treatment that works with the body, enabling long term changes to take place.
If you're stuck in a pain cycle and looking for a treatment which can create lasting change, then get in touch to find out mor about our myofascial release treatments.

🔸Referred Pain, Fascia and Trigger Points🔸
🔹Referred pain is when pain is present in one area of the body - but can also be felt in other areas.
🔹Some examples of this are when pain is felt in the neck or shoulder but can also refer down the arm and into the hand. Another example may be when pain is felt in the hip and also radiating down the leg and potentially all the way down into the foot.
🔹These are just two examples, but there are a number of other common examples of referred pain patterns throughout the body.
🔹It's always important to get things checked by a medical professional in the first instance.
🔹But if medical conditions have been ruled out, then many referred pain patterns can simply be down to muscle and fascial restrictions.

🔸The Hyoid Bone🔸
🔹The Hyoid Bone is located in the neck, just below the mandible (jaw bone).
🔹The Hyoid helps to assist in movements of the jaw, swallowing and breathing.
🔹The Hyoid can become stuck and restricted, often causing the muscles at the front of the neck to tighten and restrict movement.
🔹Releasing the Hyoid can help to reduce tension in the muscles located in the front of the neck, helping with issues such as TMJ, facial pain and even reduce snoring❗

🔸Tight Hips Causing back Pain🔸
🔹The hip flexors are a group of muscles which stretch from the lumbar spine across to the front of the inner thigh.
🔹When the muscle becomes short and tight, they can create a curve in the lower back. Quite often, this can result in lower back pain as the curve in the lower back creates compression around the joints.
🔹Often, clients will report pain whilst out walking or discomfort whilst standing for long periods, often having to switch their weight on to the opposite leg to reduce the strain on the lower back. There is also a feeling of 'being pulled forward' whilst standing or walking.
🔹The key to reducing the back pain is to release tension in the iliopsoas, along with strengthening of the core muscles to prevent the problem form reoccurring.

🔸Ongoing back and hip pain following childbirth🔸
🔹Many new mums can often experience ongoing back and hip pain issues - sometimes for years after giving birth. This can often be due to a weakening of the core or ligament laxity in the pelvis. Although these explanations can be responsible for back issues there can be some less obvious reasons.
🔹One of these can be as a result of restrictions in a muscle known as the Quadratus Lumborum (QL).
🔹The QL muscle is located in the space between the pelvis (hips) and the lower ribs.
🔹When this muscle becomes tight and short, it will reduce the space between the pelvis and ribs.
🔹The QL muscle, when restricted and tight, will commonly refer pain into the lower back, hips and groin (which can be extremely painful).
🔹One of the main causes of tightness and restriction developing in the QL is when mothers carry their child on their hip.
🔹The constant lifting of the hip will result in overuse of the QL muscle, eventually causing tightness and restriction - along with the aforementioned referred pain in the lower back and hips.
🔹To help reduce tension, try to develop a simple stretching programme in order to prevent the QL form becoming restricted.
Also try to alternate hips to help to prevent overuse.
🔹If the problem persists then find a therapist who can release the muscle and see if this helps to reduce pain and improve movement🙂

🔹🔸The Temporalis muscle and phantom tooth ache🔸🔹
The Temporalis muscle is located at the side of the head in the area commonly known as the temple area..
The Temporalis is one of the muscles which aids in movements of the jaw such as chewing and clenching.
When the muscle becomes tight it can often be the cause of temporal headaches but one of the little known areas the muscle can refer pain is into the teeth!
Often, when pain is felt in the teeth, yet checks have shown there's no issues with the teeth themselves, then it's worth checking to see if the Temporalis muscle is tight!
So, if you have pain in the temple area and ongoing tooth pain, then see if some soft tissue work to the Temporalis can help with some of the tooth pain and headaches.
