Detoxification is the first part of the recovery journey. It's the process whereby the toxins (alcohol) in your system are allowed to dissipate so your system is free from its effects.

There are 3 stages to the detoxification process with Regain Recovery:

1) Evaluation - we will get your full medical history from your GP, carry out blood tests to determine whether you have sustained any damage to your liver, a mental health assessment and then discuss a plan tailored to your individual requirements.

2) Stabilisation - we talk to you about the process of detox so you're prepared and understand what to expect. We provide medical and/or psychological services to treat symptoms of withdrawal and perform hourly checks during the first 24 to 48 hours to assess the level of withdrawal and ensure the medications are taking effect.

3) On-going treatment - as withdrawal symptoms resolve throughout the detoxification period, therapy will typically begin and further treatment may be required to increase the chances of sustained recovery.

Ready to take the first step towards beating this? We're here to help. Give us a call on 0333 987 5078.

There is no handbook for life and the journey can be tough at times. Sometimes, we fall back into old and destructive habits. When this happens, we can be unforgiving with ourselves, feeling we have failed, yet this only perpetuates the downward spiral into self-loathing and self-destruction.

We have to forgive ourselves for not being perfect, then we have to ask for help, get back up and keep walking forward.

A stumble is not the end of the journey.

Alcohol is a poison and it builds up in your system. Before you can start to treat the emotional and psychological causes of alcohol dependence, you first have to treat the physical consequences. This process involves purging the body of the toxin: detoxification, or detox. In the case of substance misuse, detox specifically refers to the period of time the body is allowed to process or break down any drugs and alcohol in the system and, in doing so, clears their toxic effect.

The Detox programme at Regain Recovery allows you to safely and comfortably clear the body completely of alcohol and manage the symptoms of acute withdrawal. We provide a full medically managed detox to all our clients who require this. This is paramount as detox can cause seizures, fitting and potential cardiac problems. It is therefore essential, particularly if there have been long periods of alcohol abuse, that you don't try to go "cold turkey" alone.

Detox takes place under the care of our medical and mental health team. Constant observations are performed to increase safety and comfort levels. When this stage is over, which takes up to seven days, then the healing can begin.

Becoming alcohol-dependent doesn't happen overnight and it doesn't happen for just one reason. There are many factors at work so it can be difficult to stop drinking when you want to stop unless you have outside help.

Often our relationship with alcohol starts in our teenage years and sometimes persists as we move into adulthood. It can be that we associate drinking with a feeling of relaxation or happiness, we may learn to associate it with something that's happened - a so-called 'trigger factor' so that when that situation arises or that feeling comes back, our first thought is to reach for a drink to make ourselves feel better.

The longer we allow these types of associations and behaviours to continue, the harder it can be to stop. Regain Recovery is here to help you when you decide it's time to take back control of your emotions and stop allowing drink to take the day.

Call us on 0333 987 5078 or email info@regainrecovery.com and let's start the conversation today.

Society and the media give us firm ideas of what 'alcoholism' looks like, what an alcoholic looks like. However, there are many steps that happen before someone gets to the stage where their drinking loses them their job, their relationships. Recognising the steps and taking action earlier makes the recovery process less arduous.

Some people who come to us are at rock bottom - they've damaged relationships, their careers. They're looking for help back to a life that counts. Then there are other people who come to us because they recognise where their alcohol use is taking them - and they want to address it before it becomes a significant problem.

The first stage of recovering from alcohol dependence is to manage the physical side, as the sudden withdrawal of alcohol can be very dangerous.

At Regain Recovery, we provide a medically managed detox service to rid the body of alcohol. Only after this step is completed can we move on to treating the emotional and psychological aspects of alcohol dependence.

There is no set timeframe for alcohol detox to be completed. It depends on the individual and factors which include duration, frequency and heaviness of drinking. For the majority of people, detox will start between 6-8 hours after their last drink and the process can take up to 7-days.

Alcohol withdrawal can be extremely dangerous and should never be attempted without medical supervision.

With Regain Recovery, you're in safe hands.

Words matter!

We're keen to help dispel the blame culture that so often accompanies the phrase 'alcoholic'. It's unhelpful. Important too is language. Defining someone as 'an alcoholic' feels blameful and encourages the wearer of the tag to feel shame. Shame and guilt usually lead to a worsening of the reliance on alcohol as the user attempts to find release from the feelings.

At Regain Recovery, people who have a destructive reliance on alcohol are treated for their disease.

This article is an interesting look at current thinking on how the language we use around substance abuse and mental health can affect the associated stigma.

If you would like to talk to someone impartial about your reliance on alcohol, we're here to help. Call us on 0333 987 5078 or email info@regainrecovery.com

Leaving a detox and treatment centre can be scary - you have your new-found sobriety and so far you've been cocooned in a safe place. What happens when you go back out into the world?

Coming into treatment at Regain Recovery is the first and most important step for your recovery, however, it is only the first step. The time you spend with us is only a small period of time compared to the many years that follow in recovery.

For many, adjusting to life after treatment proves more challenging, especially with the loss of the routine and structure you experience during your stay here. The reappearance of external factors and influences when you return to your previous life will be very challenging.

To help you on your next steps, in collaboration with you, we develop an individualised aftercare plan for you. This will look at all aspects of your life after treatment and address critical areas that may put you at risk of relapse.

Continued therapy is an important part of your aftercare and you will be put you in touch with one of our Family Liaison Therapists (where possible) to continue the therapeutic programme after you leave.

Loneliness and isolation is a major risk factor for relapse. We will ensure you have contacts and a support structure you can use to ensure you have the strongest chance of sustained recovery.

We have an excellent track record - we are in a great place to help you get back control of your life. For good.

Contact us today to find out more.

Regain Recovery offers a Alcohol Recovery Aftercare Programme however, it is only the first step & continued therapy is an important part of your aftercare
