One frequent question I get asked by my clients is , Can I eat fruit as it’s a healthy option ? Well the answer is , certain fruits and in moderation , because fruit will still break down into Fructose which will raise your blood sugars levels . In terms of fruits stick to fresh berries ,such as raspberries , strawberries and blueberries , add a dessert spoonfuls of Greek yogurt , the protein in yogurt is filling , I personally like Yeo Valley organic yogurt either 5 per cent fat or zero per cent fat both are only 3grams of sugar per 100 gram serving .

This week is Diabetes Awareness Week 11th June to 17th June 2018, so what's on the menu today for my lunch as a Type 1 Diabetic ? A delicious tuna salad , colourful chopped tomatoes , peppers and cucumber on a bed of spinach, sprinkle of nuts , drizzle of olive oil and fresh lemon. Blood sugar before lunch 5.6 mmol/L blood sugar 3 hours later 6.2 mmol/L ,insulin dose taken ,4 units of Novorapid. My tip for stabilising blood sugar, without hunger, or excessive calorie constriction whist promoting sustainable weight loss management is to enjoy a variety of nutrient dense foods to nourish your body and try to eliminate as much as possible processed foods and refined sugars . Keep it simple , exercise for its many health benefits , improved fitness, strength, flexibility, mood , sleep, metabolic health effects, these are numerous. I have had my own struggles along the last 28 years of managing my Diabetes day to day , so understand it's not always easy and other health issues or illness, stress and hormones all impact upon our blood sugar control but you can take positive simple steps to really transform your overall health.

Today's Guardian newspaper headlines a very worrying report that the number of adults and older teenagers with diabetes in the UK has more than doubled over the past 20 years , with 3.7 million people aged 17 or older now known to be living with the disease . Type 1 diabetes is not associated with weight but is an auto immune condition where insulin is not produced and accounts for about 10 per cent of diabetes cases. Type 2 diabetes , where little insulin is produced and is not utilised effectively by the body's cells is linked to obesity and poor diet and usually starts in later life , with 60 per cent of cases thought to be preventable and now with some GP's promoting low carb nutrition can be reversible .
Both types bring serious health complications including cardiovascular disease , kidney failure , stroke and blindness .
I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1992 which came as a shock to me and I had to start administering four insulin injections from that very day until now ,however over the years I gained weight by eating too many foods that spiked insulin which in turn also led to some other complications of diabetes .So what have I learnt ? The cornerstone of health is the right nutrition , food is literally your body's medicine and this is what we must first address , eat real unprocessed
food that nourishes and heals the body and which keeps insulin levels low.
I have now also qualified as a personal trainer as exercise is important in the management of diabetes and has so many positive benefits for health and wellbeing but first comes the right nutrition . What happens when a Type 1 Diabetic gains too much body fat , becomes more insulin resistant sometimes referred to as 'Double Diabetes ' , develops neuropathy (nerve damage) and is put on medication , develops plantar fasciitis ( pain in the heels from being overweight ) develops thyroid problems and is put on medication for this , has raised cholesterol , develops a fatty liver ,( Gilbert's Syndrome ) doesn't feel they have the energy to exercise , makes poor food choices that spike blood sugars and insulin requirements leading to weight gain and more insulin resistance all escalating in a cycle of poor health .

In 1992 I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and over the course of 20 years slowly gained weight and developed some diabetic complications. Then in 2013 I decided to change my nutrition plan and get fit. I want to share that success with you !
