Autumn is well and truly here, with its shorter days and wetter weather, and it won’t be long before winter arrives. It is not uncommon for children to experience a touch of the ‘winter blues’ – a slump in mood that occurs during the winter months.

As it gets dark earlier and the days get shorter, the lower levels of daylight can affect the chemicals in the brain that impact mood and energy levels.
𝐕𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧 𝐃 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 - We receive less Vitamin D from the sun; children in particular are spending less time playing outdoors, and when they are outside, their skin is covered with layers of clothing to keep them warm, preventing the sunlight to reach their skin and generate Vitamin D.
𝐀𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 – During winter months, when the days are shorter, our bodies produce more melatonin, often known as the sleep hormone, resulting in us feeling sleepier and more lethargic.

Here are some strategies to counterbalance this and see you and your children through the season change:
🌳get closer to nature
💤encourage good quality sleep (relaxing bedtime routine, avoid screens, alcohol and caffeine before bedtime, consistent wake up and go to bed times)
🏃increase physical activity - walking, gardening, sport - doesn't matter what, as long as it is something you enjoy
🍎eat a balanced diet
🙂plan things to look forward to

Our young people have been busy at our Thursday lunchtime club — and we’ve got the pics to prove it! ✨

There are still spaces available, so if you have a young person who is home educated or accessing alternative provision, this could be the perfect place for them to connect, create, and have fun.
