Sarah 32, was raised in a home where her parents got divorced at 8 years old.

The divorce was a hostile. Her and her brother were unconsciously used by their parents to hurt and punish each other. They fought ruthlessly for custody and refused to cooperate. In the battle, no adult helped her make sense of what was happening, and most of the time she had to listen to both parents venting about the other.

When her mother gets custody, her father moves to another state. He starts a new relationship and Sarah feels the deep pain of abandonment. She used to fantasize about her parents getting back together and on holidays with him she would focus all of her energy on getting his attention— putting on shows in his living room or writing him notes about what a great dad he was. He is self absorbed and critical, which is a cue for her to work harder for his love. When she’s back at her mothers, she wasn’t allowed to acknowledge her fathers existence or the grief of losing him.

By 21 the unresolved trauma of abandonment has revealed itself. She’s drinking a lot and has an addiction to male validation. When she meets someone new, “winning” his attention becomes a sole focus. These men have become a version her father— a way to mask the pain from the loss of his love.

On many occasions she wakes up next to strangers or men she isn’t actually connected to. She feels shame and disgust which leads her to drink more. It’s a cycle where she re-lives the familiar feelings of her childhood.

At 30, she has a dark night of the soul. After a breakup with a critical partner (similar to her father) she has a panic attack. She wants to drink, but at her rock bottom she knows she needs to heal. She spends the next year: healing, doing the work, and dedicated to her own evolution.

Her stomach turns when she thinks of her past. She’s repulsed and how she shared her body with strangers, how she neglected herself, and how she sabotaged relationships with people who cared about her. But, she’s working on being the person she wished she had as a child. The little girl in her just wanted love— and she’s slowly forgiving herself for what she did in survival mode

Christmas and social media can often trigger feelings of failure in us, despite trying our best to give our families a magical time. If you're run off your feet, yet still feeling like you're not doing enough, check in on your thoughts:

What story is running in the background?

What evidence is there that you have failed? You might be surprised at the answers! ✨️

Creating distance from your thoughts:

💭 I am a failure.
Vs.
💭💭 I am having the thought that I am a failure
Vs.
💭💭💭 I am noticing that I am having the thought that I am a failure.
