Feeling flat, tired and not quite yourself? Keep telling yourself it’s the post-Christmas/New Year slump?

It might actually be low vitamin D!

The sun is in short supply at this time of year, which means our bodies might struggle to make enough vitamin D naturally. That’s why diet, supplementation, and knowing your levels, really matter.

Did you know, I run regular phlebotomy clinics in Milton, Weston-super-Mare, every Tuesday morning and I can carry out your blood test and, most importantly, help you understand what the results actually mean for your health?

Available as a standalone service or as part of a personalised Nutritional Therapy package. https://www.yumnutrition.org/

Most people assume that when they see a Nutritional Therapist, they’ll be handed a meal plan and sent on their way.

But it’s never just about food - when I work with a client, I look at the whole person and ask:

✨ How are you sleeping?
✨ How do you manage stress?
✨ How do you move your body?
✨ What are your relationships like with others and with yourself?
✨ How does your day actually flow?

So if you come to me with headaches, digestive issues, fatigue or hormonal symptoms, it’s not a case of ‘here’s a supplement’ and the problem is solved.

Instead, I ask why your body is communicating that way, and together we build a lifestyle that genuinely works for you, not against you.

Ready to stop treating symptoms and start supporting you? Get in touch and we can get started.

Over the past year, many people have turned to weight loss injections like Ozempic and Mounjaro. They can be effective, but there’s very little support when it’s time to stop.

And stopping is inevitable.

They’re expensive, not a long-term solution, and that’s when the real work begins.

Emerging evidence suggests that a large proportion of weight lost may actually be muscle mass, around 70% in some cases.

Why does it matter?

1. Muscle = metabolism - lose muscle, metabolism drops
2. Muscle helps control blood sugar - less muscle = poorer glucose control
3. Less muscle now = higher risk of frailty later in life

So, while the scale might go down, the foundations of long-term health can be quietly suffering, which is why nutritional therapy is essential for:

1. Protecting lean muscle
2. Supporting metabolism and blood sugar
3. Building a plan for life after injections
4. Reducing the risk of regain and future frailty

Weight loss should never come at the cost of your long-term health, so if you need support and strategy to help guide you off of weight loss medications, please get in touch and we can discuss how we can work together.

Have you been taking part in Dry January this month?

Over the years the true message of going alcohol free has become a bit lost, as it was not originally about simply giving up alcohol, but discovering the benefits we can reap from doing so - a calmer mind, a better night’s sleep and more energy.

We all know what the negative effects of alcohol can be on the body and, according to The British Medical Journey, an alcohol-free month can help lower blood pressure, reduce diabetes risk, lower cholesterol and many people have even reported brighter skin, feeling more relaxed and better-quality sleep.

So if Dry January is going well for you and you’re feeling good for it, perhaps you want to look further into improving your diet and lifestyle or perhaps some of your symptoms haven’t shifted like you thought they would? This is where I can help.

We can take a deep dive into your diet and lifestyle as well as your wellbeing and even test your blood levels. Why not book a 30-minute initial consultation to discuss what you need help with? https://my.practicebetter.io/ #/5eca2d132a98230728965624/bookings?s=5edb6e682a982306fcaf352b?

This month is Love Your Liver Month, but your liver deserves love all year round as it's one of the hardest working organs in your body, responsible for 90 vital functions.

It does a LOT more than just detoxing alcohol from our systems. It also plays a key role in:

Blood sugar regulation
Hormonal balance
Fat metabolism and fat loss
Skin health and digestion

And if the liver isn’t functioning properly, it can show up as various different symptoms, including:

Migraines
Hormonal disruption
Skin breakouts
Difficulty losing body fat.

In fact, if your liver can’t detox effectively, your body often tries to detox through the skin instead.

One condition I see often is Non‑Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), which can often be diagnosed through routine blood tests if they show raised liver enzymes.

However, there’s rarely a clear care pathway and people are often told to ‘eat a low-fat diet’, which is quite vague and misses the point.

NAFLD isn’t usually driven by high fat intake. It’s more commonly linked to high sugar and refined carbohydrate intake, which causes the liver to store fat within the organ itself. And if there’s fat in the liver, there’s often fat around other organs too, which is not good news for long-term health.

The good news? A lot can be done through nutritional therapy to support liver health, metabolic balance and overall wellbeing.

If you’re struggling with the whole ‘New Year New You’ thing, I just want to remind you that, when it comes to making a change within your diet or lifestyle, it has to be done in a way that is manageable and sustainable.

Huge, dramatic changes are difficult to keep up with, which is why so many New Year’s resolutions fail.

As part of my services, we can look at small ways you can incorporate these new changes so that they become a normal part of your routine and something you eventually don’t have to even think about.

We’ll go through everything with a fine tooth comb, including your medical history, family medical history, sleep, movement and the food you currently eat.

Once I have gathered all of the details, I will spend 2 hours pulling together all of the information that we have discussed and will draw up your own, unique nutrition and wellness plan.

This will be split into separate phases so that we can introduce one phase of the plan at a time to ensure that you have a chance to implement it fully.

If you want to find out more about the entire process, you can do so via https://www.yumnutrition.org/consultations/everything-you-need-to-know/ and if you’re interested or have any questions, please get in touch.

When a woman experiences low energy, low moods, no motivation, they’re encouraged to explore hormones, speak to a GP, look into HRT, but many men don’t receive the same advice.

I see lots of men come to have their testosterone checked, as if they suffer with similar symptoms, they’re told it’s ‘just depression or anxiety’, and while those experiences are very real, what’s often missed is what’s driving them.

Testosterone plays a huge role in:

Mood and mental wellbeing
Motivation and drive
Energy levels
Overall quality of life.

Low testosterone isn’t just about erectile dysfunction. Symptoms can easily be written off as ‘life’ or ‘stress’, when hormones actually play a big part of the picture.

If you’re feeling flat, unmotivated, anxious or exhausted, it’s worth looking deeper. Hormones matter, for men too. https://my.practicebetter.io/ #/5eca2d132a98230728965624/bookings?s=5edb6e682a982306fcaf352b

This time of year can be rough on our digestive systems. We’ve gone from the light fresh food of summer to a diet potentially heavier in ‘stodge’.

Even the seasonal fruit and veg can feel like they’re heavier on the digestive system, going from salads and berries to root vegetables.

This can come with a whole host of digestive havoc - and bloating can be one such side effect of the autumnal change in diet.

So here are a few foods known for their bloat banishing properties to help you out when things are feeling a little tight.

Yoghurt - packed with probiotics, yoghurt is known to help promote a healthier gut. This means it could reduce the frequency or severity of bloating that you may experience.

Ginger - tea, biscuits or in a stir fry - ginger is great for helping to calm an unhappy stomach. Research has suggested that it could help to increase the speed at which your stomach empties, preventing bloating and feeling ‘over full’.

Oats - oats are high in fibre, meaning they can help things move through your digestive system. They also contain a specific type of fibre that has anti-inflammatory properties.

Peppermint Tea - widely used as an ‘old wives tale’ treatment for digestive discomfort. Peppermint oil has been shown to help with inflammation and treat symptoms of IBS, and it’s thought that these properties could also apply to herbal tea.

Pineapple - pineapples contain an enzyme called Bromelain - which has been shown to fight inflammation and reduce digestive issues such as bloating and swelling.

If you want to take a deeper dive into your nutrition, we can do just that!

I offer a range of nutrition packages at https://www.yumnutrition.org/consultations/nutrition-consultation-packages/ or get in touch to discuss in more detail.
