When an employee suddenly stops responding, it can leave small business owners feeling unsure and stressed.
No messages. No explanation. No clarity on what to do next.

The most important thing is to stay calm and follow a fair, structured process.

Here’s what we recommend:

1. Check they’re safe
Call, text, email and reach out to their emergency contact. If you have real concerns, request a police welfare check. Their safety comes first.

2. Follow your unauthorised absence procedure
• Record every attempt to contact them
• Send a formal letter if you hear nothing back
• Give them 7–14 days to respond
• Begin disciplinary action only if necessary

3. If they return
Hold a return-to-work meeting to understand what happened and agree the next steps.

A clear and consistent process protects your business and demonstrates that you have acted reasonably at every stage.

I talk to small business owners every day and the same challenges pop up again and again. Staff leaving, people not performing as well as they could, compliance worries, hiring taking too long or going wrong and the odd workplace dispute that no one wants to deal with.

None of this is unusual. And honestly, it’s all fixable with the right HR foundations in place. Clear contracts, straightforward processes and managers who feel confident handling day to day issues. It doesn’t need to be complicated.
