Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions that a physiotherapist will treat. OA is a progressive degenerative condition of the joint. OA is a complex, multifactorial disorder affecting the entire joint structure, including bone, cartilage, ligaments and muscles. Previously it was thought to be simple wear and tear, to be expected and to be tolerated. Fortunately, we now know that this is not the case and there are a multitude of possible treatment options, whilst it cannot be cured, it can be slowed and managed for greater comfort.

OA impacts an animals mobility, comfort and therefore quality of life. The risk of arthritis increases with age, weight, direct trauma and in some cases breeding or conformational issues. Each species and in some cases specific breeds will have areas that are more frequently affected.

The aim of physiotherapy in the treatment of OA is to improve the quality of life of the patient. This is achieved through relieving pain, maintaining and where possible increase the range of motion within the joint, increase the strength of the soft tissue supporting the joint, address the possible proprioceptive issues and adapt their living environment. We are fortunate to have a multitude of modalities at our disposal to help your pets, including Massage, Laser, Hydrotherapy, exercise prescription, and many more.

I have said it before and I'll certainly say it again, The gait assessment is my favourite part of physio session.

It is a real insight in to each animals condition, watching every stride, every shift in weight, change in tail position, change in ear position. Its totally fascinating watching each animal respond to something as simple as a turn and watching a flood of information appear.

Every animal is unique, and to some degree their gait will be unique. Alongside this environmental factors, stress, and the surface can also have a huge impact on gait, unravelling all this information can be challenging, but very rewarding.

I will add, doing it in the beautiful scenery that we have, does also add to the enjoyment!

Do you enjoy the gait assessment and the debrief with your physio?

At Home care!

Having a group of professionals looking after your pets is an absolute must. But, is that all you can do to make sure your pet is happy and healthy? Or is there more we can be doing to make sure our pets are comfortable and content?

This link will show you that there is more we could and should be doing to monitor our pets and improve their muscular health. These exercises are easy to follow but effective!

Spring is most definitely on its way, and for any horse owners that also means it is also time to be on the watch for laminitis! This beautiful weather comes with its own hazards, including being the perfect grass growing weather, along with that heavy frost at dawn and dusk bringing all that pesky sugar out!

Keep an eye out for warning signs like:

- A shortened stride or stiffened gait
- Reluctance to turn
- Thickening of their crest
- Reluctance to pick up their feet
- Preferring to walk on soft ground
- Shifting their weight from foot to foot
- Change in temperament or behaviour
- Abnormal heat in the hoof wall or coronet
- Weight gain (Whilst weight gain is not a sign of laminitis, an overweight horse is at risk of getting
laminitis)

Any concerns please speak to your vet, and find out more here: https://www.bhs.org.uk/horse-care-and-welfare/health-care-management/horse-health/equine-diseases/laminitis/

🐶🐾We are excited to introduce a new physio to the Dave Cumber Vets Team🐾🐶

Please welcome Samantha Miners , Bsc AdvCertVPhys CClinEd, AHPR.

Samantha qualified as a Veterinary Physiotherapist from Middlesex University in 2016. Working with animals has always been a passion of hers and when she was at university studying equine sport science she met a vet who lectured in Veterinary Physiotherapy. They spoke about the field and that was it, she was hooked!
Samantha has worked with Dogs, Cats, Horses and Cows and has loved every second of the variety every case brings.

Samantha also has a clinical educator qualification, and has taught many newly qualified and student physiotherapists which she always finds such a rewarding experience.

In Samantha's spare time she loves to walk her three collie dogs and do agility with them, they are working dogs so they also do some farm work, which they love! Samantha also like's to ride out on her horses in the beautiful Dorset country side.

Happy New year to you all!
January is a great month to wipe the slate clean, and get to into new habits, this January why not take part in 'walk your Dog month'?

This initiative was designed to highlight the obesity crisis with out four legged friends, did you know that over 12% of dogs are overweight.
Around 20% of dogs do not get a daily walk, and those that do often get less than 20 minutes.

Life is busy and sometimes motivating ourselves to get out and get walking can be tough, but setting up a routine to ensure your pup is getting enough exercise can help with preventing a myriad of health and behavioural problems. And you may just enjoy the benefits as well!

For advice on how to get started get in touch!

Its the time to celebrate our oldies!
Our older boys and girls are worth giving all of our attention, and this is the perfect time to check in and see how they are.

How are they sleeping?
Any significant weight gain or loss?
Any reluctance to play or exercise?
Any aggression or fear when being groomed or stroked?
Stiffness or lethargy?

All of these things can be symbols of pain and in older animals we often think of slowing down as a natural progression, and unfortunately as a result we often leave this pain untreated and unmanaged.

So if you have any concerns about any change in behaviour or condition, get in touch with a Veterinary professional.

*Did this photo of Meg in her party hat need to be in this post? No. But she's fancy so deal with it.
