Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions that a physiotherapist will treat. OA is a progressive degenerative condition of the joint. OA is a complex, multifactorial disorder affecting the entire joint structure, including bone, cartilage, ligaments and muscles. Previously it was thought to be simple wear and tear, to be expected and to be tolerated. Fortunately, we now know that this is not the case and there are a multitude of possible treatment options, whilst it cannot be cured, it can be slowed and managed for greater comfort.
OA impacts an animals mobility, comfort and therefore quality of life. The risk of arthritis increases with age, weight, direct trauma and in some cases breeding or conformational issues. Each species and in some cases specific breeds will have areas that are more frequently affected.
The aim of physiotherapy in the treatment of OA is to improve the quality of life of the patient. This is achieved through relieving pain, maintaining and where possible increase the range of motion within the joint, increase the strength of the soft tissue supporting the joint, address the possible proprioceptive issues and adapt their living environment. We are fortunate to have a multitude of modalities at our disposal to help your pets, including Massage, Laser, Hydrotherapy, exercise prescription, and many more.
