⚠️Weight Loss Induced Telogen Effluvium ⚠️
Hair loss reported with “slimming jabs” is not usually caused by the drug directly damaging hair follicles. The mechanisms are mostly physiological responses to rapid weight loss, nutrient shifts, and endocrine changes. The drugs most often involved are GLP-1 receptor agonists such as Semaglutide (e.g., Ozempic / Wegovy) and Tirzepatide (e.g., Mounjaro).
Below is the actual biological explanation.
1. Telogen Effluvium from Rapid Weight Loss
The most common cause is Telogen Effluvium, a temporary hair-shedding condition.
Mechanism
Hair follicles cycle through three phases:
Anagen – growth phase (2–7 years)
Catagen – transition phase
Telogen – resting/shedding phase
Rapid physiological stress (like fast weight loss) shifts many follicles prematurely into telogen.
With slimming injections: 💉
Appetite suppression → large calorie deficit
Rapid fat loss → metabolic stress signal
Stress hormones and inflammatory mediators increase
Result:
Up to 30–50% of follicles synchronously enter telogen, causing shedding 2–4 months later.🕜
This exact phenomenon also occurs after:
☑️bariatric surgery
☑️crash dieting
☑️severe illness
☑️childbirth
So the drug itself isn't the main trigger — the speed of weight loss is.
2. Protein Deficiency (Hair is Metabolically “Non-Essential”)
Hair shafts are ~90% keratin protein.
GLP-1 drugs cause:
☑️Suppress appetite
☑️Reduced portion size
☑️nausea in some patients
Many people unintentionally eat very low protein diets.
When protein intake drops:
the body prioritizes organs and muscle
hair follicles are considered non-essential tissue
The follicle then shuts down growth early, again producing telogen effluvium.
3. Micronutrient Deficiencies 💊
Reduced food intake can lower key nutrients required for follicle metabolism:
Important hair nutrients include:
☑️Iron / ferritin
☑️Zinc
☑️Vitamin D
☑️B12
☑️Essential fatty acids
☑️ Vitamin D
☑️Folate
