📓 Tuesday Tips - The Power of Journaling for Emotional Clarity

When life feels noisy, sometimes the simplest thing you can do is pick up a pen and write.
Journaling is a powerful tool for emotional wellbeing, it helps to organise thoughts, process feelings and create a sense of calm.

✏ Why it works
Research shows that writing by hand activates the brain’s reticular activating system (RAS), which helps filter and prioritise information. This makes it easier to spot patterns, gain clarity and focus on what really matters.

A UK-based study by the Mental Health Foundation found that expressive writing - writing freely about your thoughts and feelings - can lower stress and anxiety levels and improve overall mood. Even just 15 minutes a few times a week can make a difference.

💡 How to start your journaling habit:

Keep it simple: All you need is a notebook and pen.

Set a timer: Try writing for five minutes without stopping or editing.

Use prompts: If you’re stuck, start with questions like:
“What am I feeling right now?” or “What am I grateful for today?”

Be honest: This is for you only, so let the words flow.

Journaling isn’t about perfect sentences, it’s about creating space to untangle your mind and give your emotions somewhere safe to land.

🥗 Tuesday Tips - The Food and Mood Connection

What we eat doesn’t just fuel our bodies, it plays a huge role in how we feel emotionally too.

Research shows a strong link between the gut and the brain, often called the gut-brain axis. Your gut is home to trillions of bacteria that help regulate mood by influencing the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin - sometimes referred to as the "happy hormone." In fact, around 90% of serotonin is made in the gut, not the brain.

A 2022 review by the British Nutrition Foundation highlighted how eating a balanced diet rich in fibre, fruit, vegetables, and wholegrains supports a healthy gut microbiome, which in turn can boost mood and emotional resilience.

Here are a few simple ways to support your emotional wellbeing through food:

🌱 Eat the rainbow – A variety of colourful fruit and veg provides essential vitamins and antioxidants.

🌾 Include wholegrains – Brown rice, oats, and wholemeal bread release energy steadily, helping to avoid mood dips.

🥜 Healthy fats matter – Omega-3s from nuts, seeds, and oily fish (or plant-based alternatives like chia seeds) support brain health.

💧 Stay hydrated – Even mild dehydration can affect focus and mood.

While food alone can’t solve everything, small, consistent changes to your diet can make a big difference to your overall emotional balance.

🍂 Sunday Reflection - Autumn Comforts

There’s something about this time of year that invites us to slow down and savour the little things. As the days get shorter and the nights draw in, many of us turn to simple rituals that help us feel grounded and cosy.

For some, it’s a warm cup of tea by the fire.
For others, it’s a walk through crunchy leaves, soaking up those last golden rays of sunshine.
Maybe it’s a favourite jumper, a good book or Sunday roast with loved ones.

These small seasonal rituals aren’t just comforting - they can play an important role in our emotional wellbeing, giving us a sense of stability and calm as the seasons shift.

💭 We’d love to know: What’s your go-to autumn comfort? - Share it in the comments and let’s create a list of feel-good ideas to inspire each other this season.

🌿 Tuesday Tips | Recognising Emotional Triggers 🌿

Ever had a reaction that felt bigger than the situation?
That might be an emotional trigger at play. Triggers are moments, words, or situations that spark strong feelings because they connect to past experiences or deeply held beliefs.

Understanding your triggers is the first step to managing them and protecting your emotional wellbeing.

If this is new to you, here’s an idea on how to start:

📝 Notice patterns
Keep a simple journal for a week. Write down when you feel upset, angry, or overwhelmed. Look for recurring themes, such as specific places, conversations or times of day.

🌬 Pause before reacting
When you notice a strong emotional response, try taking a few slow breaths before speaking or acting. This gives your brain time to process and respond calmly.

💭 Reflect on the ‘why’
Ask yourself what the feeling reminds you of. Sometimes the current situation is tapping into something much older or deeper.

🤝 Seek support
Talking with a trusted friend, counsellor, or coach can help you explore triggers in a safe space and find strategies to handle them.

Recognising your triggers isn’t about avoiding life’s challenges. It’s about building self-awareness so you can respond rather than react - creating more balance for both mind and body.

🌿 Sunday Reflection | How Do You Manage Stress? 🌿

Stress is a part of life, but how we respond to it makes all the difference. Some people take a walk in nature, others unwind with meditation or a warm bath, while some reach for their favourite playlist or a chat with a friend.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to managing stress - what works for one person might not work for another.

💭 This week, we’d love to know: How do you manage stress?
