With the devastating news last week that a child in Liverpool died after contracting measles, we thought it would be a good time to remind you about what measles is and how to prevent or deal with an infection.

Please speak to your GP if you have concerns about vaccinations 💚

🚴🏻‍♂️ Cycling is fantastic for our kids wellbeing and it’s fun! While we can choose designated cycle paths and lanes when out with our children to mitigate road accidents, we can’t always prevent falls from bikes, or more serious collisions, so taking steps to protect our children from head injuries is so important.

78% of bike-related head injuries experienced by children could be prevented with a helmet (gitnux website - sources cited).

A 2016 study found that bicycle helmets reduce the risk of head injuries by 51%, serious head injuries by 71%, fatal head injuries by 65%, and facial injuries by 33% (Olivier, Creighton, 2016).

A 2019 study into the impact of cycle helmet use on severe traumatic brain injury and death in a national cohort of over 11,000 pedal cyclists, using data from the NHS England Trauma Audit and Research Network dataset, found that cycle helmet use was associated with a significant reduction in severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).

The foam inside cycle helmets is designed to crush on impact in the event of a fall or collision, helping to disperse and cushion the force of the impact. The plastic shell is designed to keep the foam in place and help slide along the impact surface rather than bringing the helmet to a jarring halt.

“The reality is that even a minor injury can have a major impact. Therefore, anything that can limit damage to the brain by lessening the risk of skull fracture or reducing the amount of energy absorbed by the brain upon impact can have a significant effect on a patient’s outcome. Cycle helmets achieve both of these objectives.” -
Prof David J Sharp, IHR Research Professor & Consultant Neurologist, National Institute for Health Research.

So when you’re out and about with your children, make sure they are wearing a cycle helmet!

We have been chatting about pre and post-natal fitness and wellbeing this week - but perhaps you are pregnant now and feeling some pelvic pain or discomfort. Some studies have shown that around 30% of women will experience pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy.

This carousel explains a little more about SPD/PGP and general pelvic health and provides some suggestions for treatment and things you can do to help.

If podcasts are your thing, you can also check out these two brilliant episodes of the Family Health Podcast:

Episode 15: Pelvic Floor Health with the wonderful Claire Sparrow Pilates, pelvic floor specialist and founder of Whole Body Pelvic Health, who is passionate about women not just putting up with pelvic pain and pelvic floor issues.

Episode 48: Pre & Post Natal Fitness & Wellbeing with BBC Apprentice winner Rachel Woolford - how to feel physically and mentally good during and after pregnancy.

Did you suffer from pelvic pain or discomfort in pregnancy?

You have given birth. Your body has done something incredible. But after having a baby, we know that it can be a tough adjustment for some mums to get used to how their bodies look and feel after giving birth and to know how to gently care for body and mind as a new mum.In this week’s episode of the Family Health Podcast, we talk with fitness expert and Apprentice winner Rachel Woolford about what really matters when it comes to postnatal fitness - and it’s not ‘bouncing back’!Ditching guilt, ignoring the pressure and, when you’re ready, moving your body in a way that feels good without pressure or comparison. Rachel’s tips are honest, reassuring and brilliantly practical, you don’t want to miss this episode!Listen now wherever you get your podcasts, just search Family Health by Mini First Aid.

⚠️ Save this post! The weather may have slightly cooled over the last few days but it’s worth saving this post for the upcoming summer months if you are wondering how you should dress your baby for sleep in hot temperatures 🌡️

Babies and toddlers under 12 months old are not able to regulate their temperature very well, this function develops as they grow. All babies/toddlers are different and will begin to regulate their body temperatures at different stages so you will figure out what is right for your child.

Remember to touch the back of their neck with the back of your hand to assess body temp rather than checking their hands or feet. The neck should feel warm. If the baby feels hot or his/her skin is damp from sweating, remove some of the bedding.

Use layers of clothing and sheets or blankets that can be easily removed or added while you try to find the right combination.

For older children, the guidance about ideal room temperature is largely the same.

Thank you to Scottish Cot Death Trust for this guidance. 💚
