The Power of Positive Language in Dementia Care
September is World Alzheimer's Month, a time to raise awareness and challenge the stigma surrounding dementia.
At our care home, we're reflecting on the profound impact of language in dementia care. Words are powerful tools, and using positive language can make a world of difference. Instead of focusing on what someone has lost, we focus on what they still have and who they are.
For example, a simple shift from "she's suffering from dementia" to "she's living with dementia" can change the entire perspective. It acknowledges the challenges without defining the person by their diagnosis. We also use phrases like "we can try this together" instead of "can you remember...?" to reduce pressure and foster a sense of teamwork.
Positive language isn't just about what we say; it's about building an environment of respect, dignity, and love. This small change in our daily conversations can lead to more meaningful connections and a higher quality of life for our residents.
